Kit Kat rip off

Whatever you do, don't get sucked in to the current Kit Kat competition inviting you to buy a bar in the hope you will win £10,000. It stinks. My six-year-old son has bought several bars in the hope of winning the cash prize with his pocket money (even though I have tried to persuade him not to!). You are told to key in a code on the kit kat website - and they do, of course, ask for your email - and then what a surprise, after you have inserted the code, you are told you haven't on this occasion won £10,000. It encourages you to then buy another bar. My son has been in sobs of tears over it because he truly believes (like any child would) he can win.

It is a disgusting marketing ploy to not only encourage children to eat more chocolate but to also convince them they really will win a lot of money.

TOTAL TOTAL rip off.

"Of course it is like any other competition and of course I know we won't win - but try telling an excited six-year-old child this. I just thought I'd post a note to warn other parents beware of tears if you do decide to enter!!!"

I would have thought most parents would have a little bit more common sense and would think twice about letting their dc buy lots of chocolate just to win. My DS would have been very keen at that age, but it didn't take much explaining to him that his chances were very small and there is no way we would have had tears if he lost.

BalloonSlayer no just hers Grin

FernandoBanjo · 29/07/2011 09:58

OP are you the 6 year old?

lawnimp · 29/07/2011 09:59

don't be so harsh on the op

Sausagesarenottheonlyfruit · 29/07/2011 10:07

This is truly shocking!

Imagine, a competition in which every participant doesn't win!

OP, have you considered approaching the local press on this matter?

PamSco · 29/07/2011 10:13

Seriously, my nana sorted me out at an early age on this stuff. She gave me a bag of pennies then taught me card games where she won all those pennies back.

Last year I spent 4 days in Vegas and gambled nothing, ne desire to it is a mugs game.

Don't be mistaken that this competition isn't gambling - it is. You give money (cost of product) for the chance of return. Do you really want your kiddies to enjoy gambling?

Thanks for all your comments! If you are successful in not letting your children eat chocolate during the school summer holidays as a special treat for good behaviour, then good on you!!!

Confused
giyadas · 29/07/2011 17:07

that's not what any of the posters have said, or why you started this thread though is it?

JeremyVile · 29/07/2011 17:07

It's a joke isn't it?

Pudding2be · 29/07/2011 17:14

Off on a tangent a bit but a friends mum had a winning bar, not realising the competition ate the bar and threw the wrapper.

It wasn't until she told her son about it a day or two after she knew Blush

I thought it was hilarious Grin

LoveBeingAtHomeOnMyOwn · 29/07/2011 23:03

Yes we are the killjoys op. Seriously you need to get a grip.

LoveBeingAtHomeOnMyOwn · 29/07/2011 23:03

Pudding that is funny.

TheRealMBJ · 29/07/2011 23:13

Surely the reward for buying a chocolate bar is eating it?

Not that I don't agree with you that you should be discouraging your child from buying Néstle, you absolutely should. But surely you can explain to him that he probably won't win the cash? When I buy Dorset cereals, I do it because I like their muesli, the chance to win a camper van is just an added incentive. Doesn't mean I am going to boycott them if I don't get one with every box.

2shoes · 29/07/2011 23:15

what an odd thread, have you not thought of explaining to your child that he won't win!
if he loves Kit kats fine, let him eat the, if not don't buy them

ChaosTrulyReigns · 29/07/2011 23:47

Surely if you don't want them to eat chocolate as a special treat for good behaviour during the school summer holidays, you decide on a different special treat?

not blinking rocket surgery

differentnameforthis · 30/07/2011 01:00

My son has been in sobs of tears over it because he truly believes (like any child would) he can win

I am sorry he is so upset, but it is your job as a mother to make sure he understands how unlikely he is to win this.

It is no more a rip off than the lottery, any other comp that you part take in to win. It's a game of chance. And the chances are he will lose far more than he gains.

differentnameforthis · 30/07/2011 01:06

If you are successful in not letting your children eat chocolate during the school summer holidays as a special treat for good behaviour, then good on you!!!

That isn't what this is about though, OP! You are wound up that your ds is upset because he isn't winning a completion that a] he is too young to enter any way, b] needs to spend money to win (therefore gambling his pocket money), c] you are too daft to stop him doing so many times and d] actively encouraging him to do!

How about, 'ds, you have wasted enough money on trying to rot your teeth & win this prize, it is now time to stop' [shrugs]

ThePosieParker · 26/09/2011 14:02

Erm.....Did he get a RED kitkat?
