Appalling single use plastic

It is up to all of us to help preserve the precious resources we have left on our planet. Every day in India there are plastic bottles that are washed up from the tides. This is effecting the eco systems that affect our future and our children’s futures.

The planet we live is so precious and it’s up to all of us to respect it. Single use plastic bottles are stupid and an appalling example of wasting precious resources. The beaches and rivers in India are full of plastic water bottles that get swept in from other places. It’s so easy to buy a sturdy bottle that can be used over and over, then washed and used again the next day.

I love my society and planet, most people are really good but I wish laws could be passed that stop the production of single use plastic bottles.

All shop’s could be fitted with machines that fill sturdy bottles. Cross contamination won’t occur if this is done responsibly.

Oh, we have a climate change topic board now?! That's cool. I agree. I think the system of refilling glad drinks bottles works well elsewhere (or seems to!). My local friends of the earth group is holding a green fair in a fortnight, I'm manning a stall about plastic free / more eco swaps in the home. Hoping to spark some interesting discussions and maybe some people will make their own swaps.

Ange101 · 06/09/2021 15:49

I hope they do swap to glad bottles, it’s so important.

It affects not effects.

Why have you single out plastic bottles though, what about all the covid tests, PPE and paraphernalia that goes with it?

FWIW, I get my milk delivered in glass, we all use metal bottles, I have a soda stream for sparkling water, use beeswax wrap instead of cling etc but bottles aren't the only issue.

Ange101 · 06/09/2021 16:03

Getting rid of single use plastic bottles are no way the only issue. There are lots of ways to combat climate changes as you have said.

It’s so easy though to put this mistake right without much hassle. Single use plastic bottles should never have been made in such massive volumes.

Well here in healthcare we were tying to be more sustainable. Paper cups. Paper bibs more autoclaveable items
Less single use plastic things
Etc

Enter covid. And we’re told we must use single use plastics again and it must all be thrown out and incinerated.

Plus the extra ppe / masks / lateral flow tests / etc etc
Feels like we’ve gone backwards

@Ange101 the irony is that PET which most plastic bottles are made from is one the most easily recycled plastics. The key is to generate a market for recycled materials, this could be done by taxing virgin plastic or feedstock manufacture.

I've just doubled the insulation in my loft. The new layer is made of recycled plastic bottles. Since heating bills are going up, it seems a good idea. New garden bench is also made of recycled plastic.

There are a lot of uses for the plastic rubbish we already have, it just takes a bit of research, and saves it going to landfill.

I do not think they need to go to glass bottles given that it could be dangerous I think cardboard would be most efficient
