Climate Change

Why is it so hard to talk about climate breakdown?

I’m part of an Eco-Parenting messaging group and one of our discussions last week was ‘Why do people feel defensive or just shut down when talking about climate change?’

Is this a real perception or are we missing something?

As a symbol that the world is trying to do SOMETHING Plan

There must be ways of low carbonising\greening the confectionery industry.

The population needs to be controlled of course. I have a fantasy that an international committee is convened to oversee a World Wide Flexible 2 child per Family policy"

Peat,
Symbols should at least represent what they are about. If banning fireworks is supposed to be a symbol of doing something about climate change, it should at least have some impact on climate change instead of no impact. It’s just taking away a fairly green form of entertainment.

I agree the confectionary business needs to be made more green.

I by no means think people should do nothing. On the carbon foot print thread I took the wwf carbon calculator and scored 72%, or well below the 2050 target, which is below the current U.K. average. Since I first worried about the climate I have taken my personal impact vey seriously.

I just think that the repeated use of climate catastrophe deadlines, and language like “last chance to save the planet” is not helpful because the last thirty years we have have four or five last chances and are now on our fourth future prediction of climate collapse.

I look at.the extreme weather events in Siberia, Moscow, Australia etc and I can't believe almost everyone is just carrying on as normal!
I don't know what point of breakdown we will be at before people pull their heads out of the sand. All the brightest people I know seem to accept it is happening and be starting to make changes but nearly everyone else seems quite happy to just tootle along as normal.

It has shocked me that even on Mumsnet (with a generally quite intelligent/educated group of people) it seems no one wants to talk about it. I started a thread the other day about which charities to donate to as part of my efforts to tackle climate change and I got only 2 responses.

I don't know what it will take for most people to wake up and make changes.

I actually donate to WWF. To me it is like a Noah’s ark to shelter & preserve wildlife from the effects of humans on earth.

Yep I fear we humans are the frog and CC is the pan of water. Slowly heating up.

... fairly green entertainment I don't want to start a bunfight but have you been out on Guy Fawkes night in London?? I wonder how green all the manufacturers are too . That's without the safety aspect of the hideously deafening things.

The headlines about the environment are ignored by most people because it's like smokers with their dire adverts on the packets they don't want to see them so they don't see them.

Fireworks are totally unnecessary and should be banned.
