They are making headlines! It been covered on the main news channels for days, it's in all the mainstream press, it's all over my twitter, and continues to be online news and a talking point around the world.

That is some serious publicity.

The Attenborough programme last night was uncompromising about the need for action. And let's face it, if this younger generation - many of whom didn't get a vote in 2016 - don't act, no doubt the frothers would accuse them of apathy.

bruffin · 19/04/2019 12:46

They are not reaching those young people as we have student interns etc in a place that is involved in policy making for pollution etc and i 9verheard them talking about. They were dishusted that they used tactics that were causing more damage to the environment

bluejelly · 19/04/2019 13:25

Climate change is such a huge l, knotty problem I think we will need a range of tactics to address it. BBC/Netflix documentaries only go so far.

This made me laugh, these interns need to get out more. No way these protesters have caused as much damage to the environment as Governments who have failed to create adequate environmental laws and policies or companies who don't give a shit about the environment full stop. I suspect they feel they are being personally attacked as despite their workplace's involvement in policy, things are getting worse not better.

And my dc plus their friends do care and are worried. My humble opinion is that protest like we have seen lately is needed, not simply because of publicity but also to force the Government to take action to create proper legislation that will make a real impact on saving this planet. Yes we can all do our bit but we may need a carrot and stick approach. For instance, if we banned all disposable coffee cups etc, initially people would moan but we would all get over it.

Mayor of London's response to climate change protest as "we must get back to business as usual" and lack of use of the opportunity to accelerate change is very disappointing.

camelstraw · 22/04/2019 23:25

Anyone know what's likely to happen over coming few days?

Once term starts, I was thinking of going along

DocOfChoc · 23/04/2019 17:15

They post regular updates and plans on Twitter and Facebook camelstraw.

I support XR’s actions - not been at protest as not ‘arrestable’ but have been on youth strike marches and they just don’t get the same attention. I get the emails and have watched Dr Gail Bradbrook’s videos - online - they would be very sorry for the inconvenience and pain caused to people who have had to spend extra money and will absolutely have weighed the air pollution issue against their ability and need to make the biggest impact possible. They are trying to shift the ‘Overton window’ on the debate and get a response from Government. Civil disobedience is the only way they could get enough attention to be successful in that aim. Emissions need to stop for there to be any hope of not reaching degrees of warming that we can’t adapt to. Yes you can do good things by litter picking but at the moment the pressing concern is a debate informed science and action informed by science that will enable us to hit the targets we need to. The planet is heading for a tipping point in our children’s lifetimes and the Govt’s Environment Bill doesn’t go far enough. Emergency times call for emergency measures. But maybe they should be more targeted next time...that’s good feedback and if I get further involved I will remember it
