Anyone managed to cure back pain brought on by bulging discs

Just wondered if anyone has managed to cure this.
I have 3 bulging discs l3,l4 and l5 never had a back issue until i stupidly tried running when i was 34.
Im 45 nearly 46 and my back has got much much worse to the point i climb my house stairs , food delivery many many other things.
Ive tried physio, 4 different chriopractors, yoga(made it worse), accupunture and sports massage.
The only thing that works is dizapan but i wont take as dont want to get addicted.
I feel like an old woman and long to play outside with my ds.
Embarrasingley i evem cant wipe the back area and have to shower after meaning i cant do a number 2 when out. Please dont be disgusted this isnt a choice.
Ive had an mri and been told no surgery option.
Im trying to loose weight through diet as i am very overweight apple with a natural 34k bust.
A few chriopractors and one reflexologist said my back muscles are very tight which they dont know if they are ceasing due to the bulging disc pain or the lack of use.
Anyone had anything simmilar?

Lose weight
Eat anti inflammatory foods
Strengthen core and glute muscles
Walk as much as possible
Find a good massage therapist
Check out Will Harlow on youtube for small but effective exercises
Sleep with a pillow between your legs
Check out your sleep position to see if you're putting more pressure on the lower back
Keep hydrated

2 prolapsed discs here! 15 years since a car accident cause it. I take gabapentin, amitriptline, cocodemol and naproxen. Used to also take morphine MST and oramorph. The best thing I found that helped was acupuncture but I needed 3 sessions a week and couldnt carry on funding it. Losing weight has helped, I've lost 4 stone on WLI. Back pain really sucks

Placemark. Yoga was a big no from my physio.

If you do find a cute I’d love to know. Spinal nerve root block was amazing until it wore off. And they won’t do it again.

Im currently walking 3 miles a day, walking is the only think which helps, I struggle to sit for more that 20 minutes at my work desk.

Stretches for back pain help, I can’t lift anything because it sets it off so use Pilates band chair exercises to try and build strength.

If I don’t move it gets much worse. Also on naproxen, diazepam.

Spinal injections, worked really well.

Although this is difficult especially to start with keeping as active as possible. I'm on my feet a lot of the time at work and although when I first went back to work I was using crutches to get around being mobile does help as my back is worse during the holidays (I work term time only).

I also take gabapentin, mostly don't need painkillers any more. Physio did help but you do have to be consistent with doing the exercises.

I need to lose weight to, but my back has actually improved a lot even without losing any.

When mine first went I had to go to A&E as lost feeling in my foot, my leg was weak as well. I could barely get out of bed for the first few weeks I was in so much pain. Its been just over a year and although I still have some issues it's so much better then it was.

You do need to lose weight sorry.

Yes I've cured bulging discs with the physio exercises plus massage for pain relief and swimming and pilates regularly since to keep it at bay.

Was offered spinal injections but researched and found outcomes just as favourable with exercise.

Also I did read that nerve damage can result if you continue with the bulge. I was getting pins and needles in hands and feet and losing feeling Mainly in my feet if I sat still for too long.

I will ask my doc about spinal injections

This is also occuring with me too. I did physio exercises to no avail

I had similar issues with a bulging disc, after 10 years of trying just about everything, I paid for an MRI privately, which essentially got me fast tracked to surgery on the NHS (Micro discectomy).

The fix was pretty immediate, and 20 years later I have very few problems with it, provided I keep my weight down, and fitness up.

I did have a flare up about 10 years ago, and paid for another MRI and was advised to leave it "it will probably sort it self out" which it did.

BagBitch · 13/04/2026 00:05

Spinal injection and weight loss did the trick for me.

Twilight7777 · 13/04/2026 00:09

CBD oil capsules gave me lesser ‘bad days’

Flower1989999 · 13/04/2026 00:20

I have an L4 L5 disc bulge and narrowing of the spinal canal causing lower back pain and sciatica in my lower left leg.

I have hàd via Bupa with my work nerve block injections and I am due to have radio frequency nerve ablation next Saturday. I hope this will reduce the pain to allow me to strengthen my back!

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 13/04/2026 00:56

I have the same and have been suffering for years. I was told no surgery available unless I’m no longer able to control my bowels or I lose complete feeling in my legs.

I’ve lost 6.5 stone in the past couple of years and it’s made zero difference to my pain. It actually comes on quicker now than it used to 😕

The good thing I found with the spinal injections is that they reduced the pain quite a lot so I was then able to do more exercise. But I think you need to take advantage of them by doing the exercise or it won't help long-term.
