Pain in lower back and hip

Carmen866 · 30/01/2026 22:13

Hi , for a few years I’ve been suffering with terrible lower back pain & hip , my Dr kept saying it’s bursitis & to strengthen my glutes , some nights I can’t lay on my hip it’s so sore .
However after a lot of Dr visits I got an MRI referral it turns out I’ve got bursitis , a degenerative grade 4 hip problem and a laberal tear
I’m currently waiting for a lumbar mri
In the mean time I am doing the exercises advised by the physio , side legs raises , clam and bridge for my back but it leaves me in agony

Any advice please ? Is anyone going through this painful condition?

Im in a similar position. The exercises I've been given make things much much worse, like clams and side leg raises. Whereas I can do body pump and 10kg weight squats with no problem. Im not convinced it's a lack of strength problem! I have mild bursitis in both hips but only pain in one so I'm not convinced that bursitis is the problem. I've seen so many physios and osteopaths and they all say different things and none of the treatments help. My MRI was normal. I domt really know what to do next.

I had bursitis in one hip some years ago, went to a private physio who did a couple of sessions of microwaving on that area, worked like a charm! No exercises. Only took around 10 mins.

Hi Bluemin , I understand your frustration if your MRI is normal , have you had a lower back MRI or was that done with your hip ?

Gentle sheep ,I’m glad to hear that the treatment worked for you , I had an MRI on my hip but really wasn’t prepared for the result to say I had other problems

Lower back and hip. They can't find anything wrong but I've been in constant pain for 4 years and get pins and needles down my leg and into my foot. I haven't found that anything helps other than sports massage and that only gives me a few days relief then it's back to constant pain again.

I have leg and hip issues that have in turn created bulging discs.

For years I was told that clams were the answer but the latest physio says not to do them as they are aggravating and subluxing the hip. The bridge exercises do seem to help my back and she has devised others to try to get some muscles to work without the physio leaving me unable to walk.

It’s just as worrying of not knowing what’s causing the pain or the reassurance that everything is clear . Could it be Sciatica?
I Personally feel older than my years with this pain my hips are like boards so stiff .

Yes they think it could be sciatica but that doesn't really help as there's no reason to explain why I have it in the first place and no treatment helps. I'm having another MRI soon (corona? Lumbar spine) that apparently looks closer at the SI joints so maybe they will find something. I've spent so much money on physios, osteopaths and massage therapists and nothing helps long term. Its very frustrating.

justasking111 · 30/01/2026 23:40

Sciatica and bulging discs masked the fact that arthritis had taken hold in my hips. The clam was so painful, then I couldn't do squats. In desperation went privately, had x-ray and scan. Both hips stage 4. Have had one OP. Second hip surgery next month. I'm so angry that it was missed earlier.

I had constant back and hip pain and then I lost a stone in weight and it improved. Not sure if the fat was pressing on a nerve or what tbh.

Iwantsandybeachesandgoodfood · 30/01/2026 23:45

3 years after hip pain and bursitis diagnosis a different consultant looked at my lumbar MRI and saw that it was nothing to do with my actual hip, a slipped disc is pressing on a nerve. The only thing that gives me any relief is ice on my lower back.

I’m mid 40’s and have had hip
pain in one side for years, on and off.

It’s been extremely painful for a couple of years now, much worse in last 6 months.

Physio has said I have weak glutes, but the strengthening exercises don’t seem to help.

I walk for 4-5 hours a day, 4 days a week.
1-3 hours 3 days a week.
Play racket sport regularly, run once a week and do pilates 3-4 X.
So I’m not unfit. Just in agony all the time…….

As well as pain I have intermittent weakness with no strength at all in the leg on that side and occasional numbness accompanied with a sort of pulsing pain down the whole of the leg.

MRI says I have problems in the hip that has no pain, so that wasn’t useful…..

Flitteryflatteryflips · 31/01/2026 00:01

I have arthritis in my hips and lower back. I was advised not to do anything that makes the pain worse and to take painkillers when the pain is bad.

Slimtoddy · 31/01/2026 00:07

Have similar. I have herniated discs and hip osteoarthritis. I swim regularly and I feel it helps a lot. I find physios tend to give you same exercises they gave to every other individual with similar problems. Twice now physio has made it worse. I have read a lot about pain and how pain is felt by the brain and how stress can worsen your perception of pain. It hasn't helped me manage the pain but it has made me aware how my mood impacts my pain levels.

15February1960 · 31/01/2026 00:48

Ive just had pre med for a total hip replacement.. l have an alightment pillow for sleep ( see photo). I broke my hips and pelvis and have osteoarthritis.. had injections. / acupuncture/ physio.. l have a 10mg slow release morphine patch.

I've got lower back and hip pain. I saw a rheumatologist who has did an MRI, x rays, blood tests (for inflammation) and a DEXA bone scan. Osteopenia, anklyosing spondylitis and facet arthropy. Basically low bone density and arthritis (both degenerative and inflammatory). It's mainly managed through exercise and pain killers (and steroids when particularly bad).

Are you able to get a referral to a rheumatologist??

Yes that sucks, the extra problems will be adding to the pain. I hope you find relief soon.

GreenLeavesEveryday · 31/01/2026 06:35

I use the sleep pillow that @15February1960 has pictured. I really know about it if I forget to use it.

Carmen866 · 02/02/2026 23:17

I feel for you all it’s quality of life and tbh I’m sick of my constant hip and lower back pain as you all are I’m sure ..

Most don’t take it seriously atall Iuckily I got my referral through the physio as the Drs just shrugged my pain off .
The exercises can be painful and like some of you I wonder if I’m doing more harm than good .
There seems to be a lot of discussion that clams are not beneficial and can aggravate a condition, this one of the exercise I was advised to do
