Slipped disc advice

purplerain270 · 04/10/2025 16:45

Advice needed. Had a protruding disc in lower spine causing sciatica for few years. Had a groceries delivery, twisted to put item down and felt a pop in my lower spine, it went numb followed by excruciating pain. Unable to change position in bed without severe pain, continues today, difficult to sit stand can't bend. Painkillers ease it slightly, being cocodamol and tramadol from previous pain. Now deep buttock pain and some numbness, will a gp appointment next week suffice.

I found that the only chair I could sit in was a reclining garden chair. The couch and dining chair was too painful. Also, I had to keep moving, I walked up and down my lounge for a whole day once.
Rest it as much as you can, absolutely no bending and get onto the GP on Monday.

I sympathise. 2013 my two L disc ruptured, I have sciatic nerve and femoral nerve damage and partial numb right leg. You really need Gabapentin short term. Are you able to get to A&E. You need to keep an eye out for Corda Equina .

When my DH had a slipped disc the gp actually sent a doctor out to our house. I believe if you are not careful you can end up with incontinence.
I would call 111 and see what they advise. My DH had to take a pretty high dose of diazepam to relax the back spasm and avoid more damage.
I suspect they will send an ambulance as I don’t see how you could get to A&E yourself if you can’t comfortably sit.

Thank you for advice, I'm not one to complain, had life threatening anemia an refused ambulatory care as didn't feel that bad. My ds not seen me in pain like this before so worrying him, trying to keep normal but wince due to pain, cd I b making it worse trying to carry on?

I don't want to be sat in a an e for hours, suffer with anxiety and agoraphobia so will avoid at all costs.

Definitely GP appointment on Monday. Rest over the weekend but do attend A&E if you develop any saddle numbness, or incontinence/retention of any sort. Basically any change in bladder or bowel habits can be a red flag so make sure to go to A&E if that develops.

How are you feeling @purplerain270 ? Were you treated adequately?

Hope you are on the mend.
