Severe hip pain at night!

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar. Over the last few weeks, when I wake up in the middle of the night to turn over I am in so much pain with my hips and my ankles almost to the point I can’t turn around! I have to slowly ease into it and wait a few mins. The best way to describe the pain is a really awful sore ache! I had 2 failed epidurals and eventually a spinal block when I had my dd 6 months ago. Could this be related!? It also happens during the day if I’m sat down or even laid on the couch for 10 mins. Could it be arthritis!? (I suffer with psoriasis and I know this can sometimes be linked) I’m going to make a doc’s appointment in the morning but just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar.

Yes, this sounds familiar.

Not my ankles but hip & knee pain.
I have OA and it does sound similar.
I have to get up & take painkillers!
I'd definitely get it checked out. x

When you say you wake to turn over, what position are you in to start with? I’m wondering if a certain position is causing pain that makes you wake.

You have my sympathy, chronic pain is awful, and the effects are underestimated. You’re doing the right thing approaching your doctor.

This is purely my experience but Ive had this before - intermittently and at night. After my third was 6 months old I was in hospital for an unrelated issue and had a load of tests, one of which was vitamin D… it showed it was REALLY low which is not surprising as hate the sun and avoided it during pregnancies etc… mine was so low they had to give me a really high starter dose for a few weeks followed by a maintenance dose - hadn’t thought about it but noticed after a few weeks I no longer had the hip aches at night and 12 years later, it’s not come back! Worth thinking about?

CheeseDreamsTonight · 18/03/2025 01:43

Are you hyper mobile? I had a mobile pelvis while pregnant, SPD, and it took years to recover and one of the main issues was sacroiliac joint nerve compression and instability while turning over. I slept with a pillow between my knees so everything was in line and had to hold my knees together to turn over which helped no end. I also had physio and it turned out I had forgotten how to use my glutes which didn’t help the constantly trapped nerves in the bum.

Maybe some physio could identify the issue

I have this with osteo arthritis, since had 2 hip replacements which has helped but currently have really painful knee pain at night and in the day. I sleep with a pillow between my knees and use voltarol cream when it’s bad

Thanks everyone for your advice, I did suspect OA hopefully it’s not but I’ll know for sure after I check with the docs. I’ll also mention about vitamin D as it has been a problem once before.. never crossed my mind this could be the reason!

I get this. It's bursitis in my hip.
Steroid injections every now and again sort it out also when I started get it disappeared!

Missrosie123 · 18/03/2025 04:58

I started to suffer with my hip and knee after my sons birth. Osteoarthritis runs in the family so I was worried. I was definitely vitamin D deficient and sorting that helped. However the thing that made the biggest difference was actually changing my mattress. I’d always had soft/ medium but now need a firm mattress. All my hip pain disappeared. Pre pregnancy I could sleep on anything with no issues. Post pregnancy I start with the pain again after a holiday if the mattress isn’t firm. So a definite connection for me.

AnotherVice · 18/03/2025 07:28

How old is your mattress?

NCTDN · 18/03/2025 07:32

I have this and need a knee replacement at some point. I’ve def got osteoarthritis but very interesting to hear about the vitamin d levels.

ladymammalade · 18/03/2025 07:36

Mine started during perimenopause but I assume you’re too young for that…having a pillow between my knees to sleep can help.

Hannah0120 · 18/03/2025 16:22

My mattress isn’t even a year old yet but I suppose that could still be an issue. Don’t think it’s anything to do with menopause as I am 26. Couldn’t get a docs appointment today so will try again tomorrow, fingers crossed! Thanks again

I’ve just been to the doctors for results to a blood test. It turns out I’m v low in vitamin d and calcium which could explain some of the joint pain.

I was about to say the same. Im
a side sleeper and this and sitting for long periods set it off.

justasmalltownmum · 18/03/2025 21:12

Lack of vitamin d!

timestressed · 17/04/2025 01:38

Did you try to sleep with a pillow between your legs?

Katr673 · 17/04/2025 01:49

I have psoriasis and have the same problem. Have been diagnosed with psoritic arthritis. Mainly affects my knees and left hip . My brother also has psoriasis and also suffers from psoritic arthritis.

Interesting! Thanks for this. Could I ask, was it hard to get a diagnosis? I am 26 and I feel the doctors just brush me off as being “too young” for things like this but it’s deffo not right!! Couldn’t even turn over in bed again last night.

Yes I've had this. I used to be in tears it was that painful.

Extremely low vitamin D was the culprit.

It took quite a while was referred to dermatology for the psoriasis but it was rheumatology who diagnosed the psoritic arthritis. If you haven't seen a rheumatologist it might be worthwhile asking to be referred.
