Hi, can anyone help at all. So my husband has had really bad chronic jaw pain on the right side of his face, he also gets pain behind his ear and on the cheek bone for the past 3 weeks on and off but when the pain comes he's in agony! Been to an emergency dentist this morning and they've said his teeth are all fine so that's ruled out. He's got an app with a GP tomorrow. I'm so concerned as just can't pin point what it is. Anyone else had this???

TMJ? Does he grind his teeth?
Or chronic sinusitis or ear infection?

DaysofHoney · 02/03/2025 19:23

Jaw pain can be TMJ, a sort of repetitive strain disorder from over clenching - mine has only ever affected one side and it can be excruciating. Does he grind his teeth?

Chillilounger · 02/03/2025 19:37

I came on to say dentist. They would have noticed if he was grinding his teeth. Worth checking out, it could be referred pain. Are pain killers touching it?

Randomuser9876 · 02/03/2025 19:46

I have similar... Due to clenching at night and facial tension so not grinding with tooth wear as such.

Totally stress related, better when I consciously relax/don't drink too much etc

Does this tally with your DH? Is he better if relaxed/on holiday?

Don't want to panic you, but jaw pain can be a sign of heart problems. My cousin went to the dentist for jaw pain, was sent to hospital, and had a fatal heart attack soon after he arrived.
There is an excellent chance this is not going to happen in this case, but it should be checked out.

Thank U all for answers, dentist did say could be grinding his teeth but he doesn't do this and like she said if he did he would be in pain when he eats etc which he isn't. The pain comes on so suddenly and it's agony for him. We are thinking tmj too as symptoms are spot on just worried what is causing it. He is currently at the out of hours GP now as he's been in so much pain we rang 111. And he is not 1 to moan about pain 🫤 hopefully have more answers tonight. Thanks all x

I don't grind my teeth I clench my jaw tightly which causes jaw pain.
I have clenched some mosh I've spilt a tooth in half.
I use a night guard to help and do some stretching exercises that I found on you tube

I’m the same. I clench my teeth but don’t realise I’m doing it. My jaw joints click and crunch like crazy when I open and close my mouth. It’s agony when it flares up. Ibuprofen helps me for the inflammation . Avoiding chewy foods like toffees etc, singing and yawning (tricky to avoid yawning) was the advice I got when I saw a specialist about my TMJ dysfunction

This sounds very much like trigeminal neuralgia, especially the pain level and cheek bone location, have a look online. It's often misdiagnosed as something else like dental of TMJ. Just noticed this post is quite old, hope he's gotten to the bottom of it.
