Hip Morphology

Hi, I’ve been having pain in my hip/groin for almost a year now, it started in my glutes, then seemed to progress. Sitting in 1 position for extended time aggravates it, which It was disrupting my sleep so much that I had an MRI which showed I have a CAM Morphology, which basically means my hip joint is an abnormal shape and causes pinching & all the tendons are having to work extra hard to stabilise it, hence the glute pain.
After 2 steroid injections, I still have no relief so the doctor has suggested keyhole surgery, which I believe involves shaving of some of the bone in the hip joint to reshape it.
Has anyone else had this, what is the recovery time & did it work ?? (still waiting for The appointment with specialist to discuss)
the constant discomfort & lack of sleep is really getting to me now….Thanks

@Madridmum Sorry no advice as such as I haven't had the surgery but have been diagnosed with the same thing. There are lots of groups on Facebook and Reddit (look up FAI, labral tears etc) which I have found useful even if many of the members are in the US.

Can I ask if you had your diagnosis on the NHS? It took me 16 months to see a consultant, another three months to have a scan and another three to get the results so I've kind of given up on the whole thing now.

Could physio help with strengthening so the soft tissues are working as easily and comfortably as possible to do the stabilising? Just thinking about short-medium term means of being more comfortable, not as surgery alternative.

Sounds extremely painful :-(

Thanks for the replies @garlictwist I will definitely look up the support groups that you’ve mentioned. I’m afraid to say though that no, my diagnosis & all of my treatment so far has been on private healthcare, which I know I am very lucky to have (even then I still had to push for the MRI as I felt that the physiotherapist wasn’t treating it right)
Don’t give up though, if it is still giving you pain & impacting your life you just need to keep pushing & pestering your GP - I feel thats the only way to get things done these days (he who shouts loudest & all of that!)
Good Luck

@HellonHeels Thank you - yes, I have been having physio on & off for nearly a year now, that was my first port of call when the problem first started. You’re right in that strengthening the surrounding muscles/tendons does help, but unfortunately for me it’s not enough to get rid of the issue (probably my age!) & the fact that 2 cortisone injections haven’t worked either means I am now looking at possible keyhole surgery.
My appointment is actually tomorrow so I will find out more what the Consultant has to say….
