Candesartan and migraine

Hi everyone,

So I've been diagnosed with chronic pain in the head and neck area, they're unsure whether this is migraine or occipital neuralgia, my pain is largely in the neck/base of the skull, but goes up into my eye and side of my head very bad next to my eye. Does anyone else get this with severe pain in the base of the skull/neck with migraine? I didn't know neck pain was a symptom of migraine. I've been prescribed Candesartan (pasted that for spelling) however I'm worried as it's quite a powerful drug apparently and if it's neuralgia will it even work. I currently have severe pain around 5 days a week out of 7, so I'm in drastic need of finding something that works!

Thanks everyone

I suffer with the same. I recently saw a specialist who has prescribed me Topiramate and advised me to take 400mg of B2 everyday for 3months while i wait for steroid injections into the back of the head. I feel your pain, literally!

Forgot to say, they've diagnosed it as severe migraine and neuralgia, i get the pain on top of scalp, side of nose, behind eye and base of scalp, kind of behind my ear. So painful, lasts for 4/5 days at a time and usually happens every week, so dont get much time off from it.

Yes I 100% relate to you I have exactly the same. So they've said it's both conditions combined?!

Also, does this work for you?

Yes, ive always suffered migraines but i have ended up in a&e a few times with the pain behind the ear/scalp. Even moving my hair would be unbareable and they've put it down to neuralgia. Im limited with what i can take as i have very very low blood pressure so the injections seem the best option but theres a bit of a wait.

B2 is meant to really help regardless for migraines and pains but must be 400mg daily. Holland and Barratt only do 100 but i found 400mg on amazon. Has riboflavin in it so makes your wee a really funny colour but is harmless. Ive only been on both for about 10 days so too soon to tell, will keep you posted!

Have they mentioned botox / steroid injections into the scalp? I have tried every triptan and kept so many migrain diaries they have finally approved me for them.

Cansesartan.... 18mg daily.

I was commenting on the neuralgia and migraine side of things as it may help OP.

I don't know about migraines but I take Candesartan for high blood pressure. When starting, with each increase, I had to get bloods checked fortnightly in the beginning as some people can't tolerate it. Something to do with kidney function maybe (I think, if I remember correctly!?). I've not had any bad side effects and it's been effective in controlling blood pressure.

Check out themigrainelife on Instagram. Her posts are very educational.

My daughter finds the Cefaly device helpful. You can get them cheaper on Ebay.

You can get a supplement called Dolovent (called Migravent in Europe and cheaper there) for people who suffer from migraines.

sorry, autocorrect messed it up, it is: the underscore migraine underscore life, no spaces in between

I’ve just been taken off topiramate due to licensing issues so having similar issues now (it worked really well but new rules mean my gp can’t prescribe to me any more ) I tried candersartan and it didn’t work for me but I perhaps didn’t give it long enough as it was a long process going up the doses and I started to feel a bit fluey on it too whehbi got higher up the doses.
i have just started venalafaxine which apparently can also help so will keep you posted .

Anniecott · 26/09/2024 02:29

I'm on candesartan, topiramate and duloxetine every day for my migraines, I've had the injections into the nerves, nothing is working, they are getting worse and more severe. I can't take other triptins as they don't go with duloxetine. I have an appointment with a neurologist in February, I can't wait. My symptoms now resemble a stroke all down my right side as well as the head and stomach symptoms.

I’ve just started taking Candesartan for high blood pressure but didn’t realise it was also prescribed for migraines which could be a bonus as I suffer from them too! Hope you find something that works, migraines are horrible things!
