Neproxen shortage?

Hello - wondering if anyone else is finding there's a shortage of neproxen and it can't be prescribed?

Family meme bet has chronic hip pain and should really be having a replacement, but as she's young it's not seen as urgent. Yesterday she was told she couldn't have her regular pain meds and to take ibuprofen which doesn't help and is going back to what's already been tried and failed.

I live in Wales and not aware of any shortage. I have a repeat prescription of Naproxen every month. Sorry your family member is experiencing ongoing pain and not getting any relief from ibuprofen. Is it it possible for them to go back to their GP and explain how much pain they’re in and push to get it prescribed again?
I realise it’s not easy, it can be a challenge to be listened to and taken seriously.

Isn't naproxen one of those drugs that no-one really likes to prescribe anymore due to the side effects. You don't really see it prescribed much these days unless someone has bene on it for years. Sorry no knowledge of shortages.

Oh I haven’t heard that. I needed then for the first time in 3 years this week and they were prescribed there and then (south east England)

does she take it a lot? The only reason I ask is cos the doc said to me the only reason he’s happy to prescribe them is cos I haven’t used them for 3 years and he would have considered differently if I had been using them a lot

Yes indeed there are side effects with Naproxen likewise with all other medications. Alternatives are available, Celecoxib is a similar ant inflammatory but I believe is easier on the stomach and less damaging.

Our pharmacy has been having trouble with supplies of quite a few meds. Personally we've been affected by shortages of naproxen, erythromycin, lansoprazole, elvanse and liquid senna. There was even a dioralyte shortage the other year when my dc was in hospital - the hospital was completely out of all stock and that's such a basic bread and butter thing I couldn't believe it. I think there are bottle necks in the supply chain at lots of different points for lots or different things now. They should be looking at alternative prescriptions if the usual meds aren't available.

I took Naproxen whilst waiting for a hip replacement. It came with Esomeprazole built in.

Coincidence seeing this in Active when I just found a couple of packs in the medicine box from our trip to Turkey.

I'm in Scotland & I've not had any problems getting my Naproxen, same issue with my hip. I have found though that Drs are prescribing cheaper alternative drugs where possible, all NHS cost cutting 😐
