Hello 😊 Please can you diagnose my foot pain.

I have an intermittent burning pain starting at top of left foot which radiates up shin - sometimes to hip.

Sometimes it happens 4-5 times per hour. Sometimes 4-5 times per day.

It can happen when I am walking, sitting down or sleeping.

It leaves me with tingly numbness and weak toes. It is very painful.

I have seen 2 physios. The private one said diabetic neuropathy perhaps? Had bloods, not diabetic. The NHS one referred me for 2 scans;bone and soft tissue. Awaiting results.

Does this sound familiar to anyone and any ideas on exercises I can do to make it go away while I wait for scan results?

All suggestions gratefully received. 😊😊😊

In no way is this a diagnosis but it could be some kind of nerve damage. I had a bulging disc putting pressure on my sciatic nerve which ended up with the outer part of my left foot being permanently semi-numb.

lyrapie · 26/10/2023 18:31

Ooh. Interesting. Thanks. How did you diagnose it and then resolve it?

Numbness and tingling sensation, always warrants investigation. Have you seen GP for examination and possibly referral to neurologist?

lyrapie · 26/10/2023 18:56

Thanks. I agree. The first few times I ignored it and put it down to menopause (just because that seems to be causing everything else!) Then the tingling and numbness started so went to GP. GP said that if the scans dont reveal anything they will refer me to a nerve specialist....

Neurologists do nerves don't they?? Have I got that right? Is that the same as a nerve specialist? How do I not know this!

OK. Googled it. Yes, they do nerves. So yes, GP said they would refer on if needed. Thanks.

Interesting. Hadn't thought of that. Trying everything right now. Thanks!

Yeah it could be a muscle that has got stuck some where, would be worth a consultation to see if helps. Does ice/warmth help stop the pain?

Fibromyalgia is what this sounds like because you talk amongst other symptoms of burning in your legs. I have it, so I know it about it well.

Fibromyalgia can't be detected by blood tests. It is detected by the process of elimination.

There are many other symptoms of it, including CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). It is degenerative so I can't give you any good news.

Pain relief can be built in to help manage it, to an extent. This is what I would be talking to your GP/hospital about

TiredArse · 26/10/2023 19:57

Did the gp do any blood tests for things like iron and b12?

@gotmygotmychristmasmiracle

It comes and goes and only lasts 30 odd seconds so I haven't checked whether heat/ice works tbh. Not sure I could get to an ice pack quickly enough. The surrounding area is normal. No inflammation. No redness ...

lyrapie · 26/10/2023 20:25

@TiredArse Yup. Had full blood count, thyroid, blood sugar, iron etc. Pretty much everything. All good. (Which is good. And frustrating).

Have you tried anything like this with spikey balls

lyrapie · 26/10/2023 20:30

@kekeffie12 @ranrandomusername2019

Thanks. Helpful. I don't have widespread pain. Just the foot pain. Plus occassional tight chest pain and a weird muscle flutter in my right chest. I looked at fibromyalgia but didn't tick many boxes Maybe it's all just menopause. Though the foot might be stretching that..... Hope your FM is OK. Doesnt sound fun.

It's nerve pain/damage, almost certainly.

Neurologist will help.

There are some vitamins that help with nerves - from memory I think magnesium?

Piriformis syndrome, the sciatic nerve passes around or through the piriformis muscle which controls the hip movement. When the muscle becomes inflamed it can cause pressure on the nerve. Pain can radiate down the leg and calf all the way to the toes. Leads to numbness of the outside of the foot and mainly the back of the leg.
If you stand on that leg you won’t be able raise onto tip toe.
It’s a condition common in runners or when you frequently rotate your hip out then apply pressure with your foot, such as operating a pedal while sitting down and rotating your leg/foot outwards (driving in some cases can trigger it)
It’s not quite the same as sciatic which is usually caused by nerve trapped by disc hernia toon.
Mine started after I did a particularly deep clean of the stairs carpet during the first lockdown. I was using a heavy upright hoover and used my foot to stop the hoover from falling down the stairs. I have suffered with chronic sciatica for years due to work, but it was only when I had severe form of it that they diagnosed piriformis.
I’ve since made changes to working position ( I use a foot pedal at an odd angle so swooped feet) an no longer have problems.
The pain was so bad that GP prescribed anti spasmodics. It took over twelve months for the numbness to resolve although I still have some sensory loss.

lyrapie · 26/10/2023 22:32

@AngAngrymum22 Thanks for that. Sounds painful. Hope your recovery is going well. I passed the tiptoe test. And this pain comes up the leg. Interesting ailment though. Rubbish time to do it though, in lockdown.

As I said, I have fibromyalgia and CFS, so I know about it, too. Mine has degenerated over the years.

It was to give information as I know mine didn't start like it has gotten over the past 18 years.

I do not do throwaway comments. The burning was a major for me, which is why I suggested the op look at it

I am not saying you defo have it. You have some symptoms that may point to it. Keep it in mind if it gets worse as a possibility
