Where would you go if you had ankle pain that had lasted over 2 years?

I guess that makes it chronic but it isn’t so bad I can’t function.

it came on acutely around two years ago and I was struggling to walk when I got up but could walk it off in a few strides. At the time I didn’t think it needed a GP appnt and thought time would sort it. Two years down the line it’s an ongoing issue which comes and goes and prevents me from wearing a heel as the ankle is too weak to support the foot position.

it’s worth mentioning that on that side my hip is in a fixed position and has been for about 18 years due to manual work. My shoulder also has issues on that side and that knee used to trouble me when I ran years back. So I have a feeling it’s a muscular imbalance causing structural issues.

Im just not sure who to go to to unravel it.

Book a physiotherapist You need that moving

EmmaBridgewaterMugs · 25/04/2023 23:08

You need to massage your arm pit ( yes, the hairy bit) as that is where the tendons and ligaments are that affect the back shoulder and neck. Don’t ask me why, ask the physio. Also do you have a handbag which is a shoulder bag? I did and I was hunching up my shoulder which contributed to the strain.

Good luck😊

(I have an appointment with them for my shoulder pain I’ve been ignoring for about 9 months, bullied into sorting it by my DH after I yelped in pain and started crying after giving him an enthusiastic hug the other week 😂)

A podiatrist. Physios often refer patients with foot/gait issues to podiatrists

RudsyFarmer · 26/04/2023 09:37

So my doctors have immediately come back and offered me a physio appointment. I’ll be honest I feel a complete fool as i really thought they wouldn’t be interested at all which is why Ive just continued to shuffle about.

Thanks so much for the telling off and making me do something rather than abject apathy which I excel at. Hopefully I can get some help and figure out what i need to do.

Good stuff OP, get that appointment booked! Don't feel daft, I ignored a broken foot for 8 years! 😂😂

meatbaseddessert · 26/04/2023 09:54

Physio. Mine once located my knee and ankle pain to my sciatic nerve and an irritated disc. Solved it.

Magicians.

ScribblingPixie · 26/04/2023 11:00

A lot of us are guilty of just shuffling along, OP. Great first step. The nice thing is with a lot of ankle exercises you can do them lying in bed - gets you an extra 5 mins in the morning!

RudsyFarmer · 26/04/2023 11:25

So I’m going to have to wait until June for an appointment as I can only do mornings.

A colleague has also recommended their chiropractor to me as I also forgot to mention the shoulder problem has the knock on effect of causing me nerve pain in my hand. So if the physio comes to nothing I’m going to make an appointment to see the chiropractor to see if she can start to unravel things.

If you can afford to I'd pay for a couple of private physio sessions before then.

Redebs · 26/04/2023 12:21

Most GP physios allow you to self refer nowadays on NHS.
They can advise if you need xrays etc
