Trapped nerve/cervical radiculopathy

Does anyone suffer from this god awful thing? It all started quite suddenly for me last Saturday night when I couldn't sleep due to pain in my shoulder blade. Over the next few days it worsened and the pain started going into my arm and started getting numbness in my hand. Someone drove into the back of me at a roundabout a few days earlier but I hadn't really thought much of it at the time as there was no damage to be seen to the car. I went to see a physio on Thursday and she thinks it is a trapped nerve between C5 and C6. She has given me exercises to do twice daily. I phoned the GP on Friday and they have prescribed amitriptyline 10mg for 1 week increasing to 20mg. I am currently alternating ibuprofen and either paracetamol or cocodamol but sometimes the pain is soo bad like all the muscles go into spasm. I have been putting hot water bottles on regularly too which helps. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice? How the heck do you sleep with this? Every position is agony!

@WaityWTF I'm glad you are getting one. I need one too and still waiting and can't afford the £1300 I've been quoted for private. Mine is giving me mental back of head headaches too- I couldn't honestly say if it's my head giving me neck and shoulder and arm
Pain or the reverse!! You have my upmost sympathy-

I feel your pain tinydancer! I was in absolute agony at the start. How long have you been on the prevailing? The GP gave me amitriptyline and it started to help after a couple of weeks. My symptoms were the same as yours. I am feeling much better now and can go a few days without even thinking about it now!! It still isn't 100% and sometimes I still get the numbness in my finger so I am straying on the amitriptyline for now. Definitely one of the worst things I have ever experienced!!

I started the pregablin on Sunday so probably not long enough. It’s such a rollercoaster and my symptoms seem to change each day but the one constant is agonising pain.

I’m so glad you are feeling so much better but I understand the fear of coming of the amitriptyline.

Mine is under £500 for the MRI and report.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/04/2023 20:17

@WaityWTF who was that through- ??

WaityWTF · 22/04/2023 21:34

A referral via my chiropractor.

But the local Bupa hospital as a similar price too

Crikeyalmighty · 22/04/2023 23:53

Ah I will check the bupa here. It looked a lot more to me, maybe I was looking at the wrong thing

So I went for a follow up appointment at the physio and despite my pain feeling better controlled he says my symptoms have worsened. I have muscle weakness and my reflexes in my arm weren’t working. He looked very sombre and said I needed an urgent MRI.
min hindsight I think he was just a bit miserable but he scared me enough that I’ve booked a private MRI for tomorrow. Only £400 for what I’m hoping is peace of mind! 🤞🏻

WaityWTF · 05/05/2023 22:20

I’m still waiting for my private MRI. Nearly there.

Glad you’ve got one sooner @TinyDancer78.

I had a patch of reflex reduced, muscle weakness and numb fingertips, and it scared the heck out of me.

For now mine seems more settled. Steady as she goes, on amitryptaline and naproxen.
