Teeth and Gum pain

I’ve always suffered with bad sensitivity in my teeth and gums but last December I had my teeth cleaned by a different Hygienist. I have had many cleanings before but this one felt different. Since December I have been in pain every single day but my dentist says teeth and gums are fine. I no longer can bear to eat any foods and have developed a fear of food now that I’m being prescribed meal replacement shakes. My Dr wants me to try Nortriptyline but I hate medication as all the side effects. I’m suffering badly with both my mental health and physical health all because of this hygienist clean. My dentist could never see me as was always booked up so said if I went private I would be seen that week so I did. I can’t afford all these appointments and still hard to get to see her. I’m due for another clean soon but I’m terrified so having to be sedated costing over £700. I’m angry, upset don’t no what to do as my life feels terrible now. The daily pain is unbearable and no one seems to care. It’s made me feel suicidal especially as I can’t eat anymore. What could the hygienist have done to me to cause all this. I just can’t take anymore of this life.

I have mouth issues, had them about 10 yrs now

it first started when I tried a new medication when I had a really bad episode of anxiety/depression when going into menopause
I just felt like my whole set of teeth were tightening up like in a vice it was a horrible feeling and frightening
i stopped the medication after that

The mouth issues continued mainly back then
it was
sore tongue feeling
taste

I went all over from the dentist to dental hospital
no particular reason found
mentioned Burning Mouth Syndrome

I then developed my teeth issue some years later
The can be ok one minute, then few minutes later all teeth start aching and the tongue soreness is still there.
I’ve changed toothpaste, bought night guard
this is years now down the line

my conclusion is stress anxiety & hormones

im just hoping one day it just goes.

@kizziee what tooth was rct you can ask for a cbct scan to see if tooth can be saved

Mandie4711 · 22/09/2023 17:49

Yes of course you can message me anytime

Mandie4711 · 22/09/2023 17:53

I’m hoping one day it goes away to. Mine started after a hygienist cleaning and pain has not stopped. I find now my mouth and lips are extremely dry all the time. I’ve seen many Dentists, Maxilliofacial and Neurologist and none of them can find anything wrong. We should not have to suffer like this and meds don’t help they just cause terrible side effects.

Deedoo · 22/09/2023 18:36

@Mandie4711 check your inbox xx

kizziee · 22/09/2023 19:35

@Deedoo for some reason I can't see messages but thank you for info re possible scan

Deedoo · 22/09/2023 20:10

Milanrae · 22/09/2023 20:46

I’m also still in the same boat :( what’s the scan for ?

SamR36 · 02/10/2023 16:14

@kizziee is your pain a nerve pain or an ache, and is it constant or certain times of day? I've trigeminal neuralgia and is down to menopause, which is nerve pain, often affects my gums and teeth, im unable to eat, speak when the pain triggers. Its down to hormone fluctuation 🙄 as if menopause dont bring enough problems

Deedoo · 06/10/2023 19:27

@kizziee was yours resolved

Deedoo · 06/10/2023 19:28

@SamR36 is your pain constant

SamR36 · 06/10/2023 21:00

@Deedoo lately yes as in flair up. My meds take edge off 😏

Milanrae · 07/10/2023 06:18

What meds help take the edge off I’ve been suffering with same pain and can’t eat struggle to talk brushing my teeth for 2 years now been to numerous dentist/ hospitals / Drs still can’t find what it is have tried amitriptyline but didn’t find that helped

SamR36 · 07/10/2023 18:06

Im on tegretol. Ive been diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia. Which sounds like what you have. Mine sends zapping pain that radiates up my face. Amitryptiline will not work for this as its a muscle relaxant. Tegretol calms the nerve. You may need a low dose. But mention it to your GP and ask for a neurologist referral. Its worth a shot.

SamR36 · 07/10/2023 18:10

I had an mri scan to see if there was something compressing the trigeminal nerve. There wasnt anything thankfully. Neurologist put it down to a virus, past trauma to the area. I've researched and linked mine to menopause

Hi,
I'm sorry to hear about the pain your teeth are causing you (from several posters)

I followed a plan that involved using a little bit of xylitol (just a little bit on the handle end of a tea spoon was recommended) put it in your mouth and with your own saliva that will form you can swoosh it around. I recommend spitting it out like mouthwash as xylitol can affect your tummy/make you windy.

You can buy a bag of xylitol sold as sweetener e.g. from tesco and a bag will last you forever. Don't overdo it or you will get a poorly tummy. Just a tiny bit.
For me it made my teeth less sensitive in cold weather.

If you Google xylitol it has proven effects on tooth health.

Deedoo · 07/10/2023 21:09

@Winter2020 will try this x

Milanrae · 07/10/2023 21:36

Hi thank you for your reply I will ask GP Again I just feel no one understands and they just send you away I have asked to see a neurologist but never seem to get referred I am waiting for a mri scan but not sure how long I will be waiting for that.
thanks for your help x

Justmyviews · 08/10/2023 11:23

Xylitol is a sweetener it will not help with sensitivity.

Sensodyn contains potassium which is proven to block the tubules in the teeth to prevent sensitivity.

There are more proven products that help the protect the teeth and provide de-sensitising properties.

Fluoride varnish
Tooth mousse

Sensitive toothpaste can also be used topically and used as a cream to put directly on sensitive areas.

SamR36 · 08/10/2023 11:37

@Milanrae no problem. Ask your Gp about prescribing tegretol. Also ask them to research TN whilst your there as your symptoms seem more than teeth sensitivity. Took me 3 gps before one locum recognised my symptoms straight away. And he was bang on. Good luck, i know the pain you are suffering. Also use a heat or freeze the area in a flair up x

You only have to Google "xylitol and teeth" to find hundreds of pages and many studies on the positive effects of xylitol on plaque formation, cavities, gum disease etc and anecdotally and in my experience it does reduce sensitivity.

But in many people it can cause upset tummy so I recommend you spit it out after rinsing.

Justmyviews · 08/10/2023 12:24

I'm a dental care professional and an oral health educator.

No where does it teach that xylitol a sugar substitute improves oral health.

The studies will show the benefits over xylitol and sugar.

Gum disease is caused by mature plaque bacteria. Xylitol is not going to stop unstable periodontitis

Time for some continuing professional development then - just bloody look. It's not "better for your teeth compared to sugar" it is proven to reduce plaque formation, cavities etc, bacteria that cause cavities etc

...it's not this one article from someone selling a product. There are loads of studies. You might work in dental health but that doesn't mean you know everything!

Just Google teeth and xylitol if you are interested or continue to not know - but don't tell me "nowhere teaches that xylitol improves oral health" when the quickest of Google has hundreds of sites that do just that!

The History of Xylitol in Finland

There’s no doubt Finland is the undisputed home of xylitol. If the UK is famous for the royal family, orderly queues and roast dinners, Finland’s equivalents are Santa Claus, saunas and xylitol. Xylitol mints, chewing gum and sweets can be found everyw...

Really would appreciate advice, from all of you knowledgeable ladies.

Have been battling some unknown health problems for the last 21/2 years, as well as this I have been told some symptoms could be menopause, had evorel 50 for 18 months flushing and sweats didn’t change. I had a hysterectomy a few weeks ago, everything removed, the night sweats are the worst as they are constant and most nights 2 hours sleep is a good night, can’t stay asleep for longer than half an hour as I’m so hot, have tried everything fans etc. After reading up on menopause but not fully understanding what I could try, it seems that some women don’t absorb the patches, also have read about utrogestoeron helping some women even after hysterectomy, any advice would be helpful, I also have extreme joint and muscle pain, not sure if anyone else has this, thanks in advance lovely ladies

SamR36 · 02/11/2023 14:25

Hi
May be you should start your own thread you would have far more help then with women with same or similar issues. Almost positive you only need estrogen after a full hysterectomy though? Utrogestan is a progesterone. May be you would benefit from Oestrogel
Good like hope you get the answers you're looking for
