Ok so the country is going through an opiate crisis and they show someone in the news who is cutting down on their fentanyl. I have been taking morphine injections for over twenty years for my chronic pain. It was stopped in November just stopped no titration no explanation .. since then I’ve been so ill first with withdrawal and now again my pain is so much worse. I cannot eat or drink properly and am in a wheelchair. Why aren’t they showing that people need these painkillers to have a life. Not just that people want off them.

This enraged me too, such a one sided view, as you say no mention of the people who need this medication to function.
All medication has side effects but if you’re in the position of not being able to get out of bed due to chronic pain unless you’ve taken strong opiate painkillers telling you to exercise to ease the pain is beyond ridiculous. It may work for some people and done conditions but there is no one size fits all when it comes to chronic pain.

exactly. The bias broadcasting corporation at its best.

Yes, I was angry too. So biased. Some of my medications were stopped, and I do exercise as much as I can but I'm still in pain
My quality of life is certainly not better for coming off opiates.
I feel like the NHS thinks chronic pain patients are an inconvenience to them. I find the attitude of some staff quite callous and judgemental.

AllLopsided · 14/05/2022 00:37

This is really shocking - they should be showing a balanced view, and also featuring patients like us who need these meds to function (including Lyrica, which has also been put on the 'naughty' list now). It's much more of a story that ordinary people are being abandoned in excruciating pain because a minority cannot use the medication properly. I'm so glad I'm not in the U.K. anymore. I've been on the same dose for years and have have never abused them.

Politics, at a guess, and this is just a guess, but any news sources will usually have a group pulling the strings for different goals or various situations,

WakeWaterWalk · 18/05/2022 22:50

I didn't know this was happening op.
Your situation sounds awful and I am so sorry.

The BBC is merely reporting the updated NHS guidelines for chronic pain management and use of opiates. You may not agree with the advice but you can't blame the BBC for reporting it.

The changes to the NiCE guidelines are aimed at new patients not patients that have been using these for years. I have that in writing from NICE.

Put in a complaint to the BBC re bias. They have to log it and reply to it and each time someone does that it makes them a little less sloppy with their biased journalism. I wrote several times to them about the way they used to cover JK Rowling (they published long nasty articles quoting lots of Stonewall poisonous statements about her and then would add a short sentence at the end saying something like “but some womens’ rights groups feel differently.” Not exactly unbiased coverage and not lawful for public-funded journalism. They have greatly improved their balance on that issue and complaints do matter.

I’m so sorry about your medical situation and how your have been treated. Is your GP / consultant able to fight for more help for you?

doadeer · 19/05/2022 20:30

I'm so sorry for your situation.

I think the issue is they don't have suitable replacement. Telling people not to take painkillers and exercise isn't going to work. I've been on a chronic pain path for 4 years, I'm finally making progress on beating it but it's all been via private health care that absolutely won't be available on the NHS. What do they expect people to do?

I sympathise with your problem but that still doesn't mean that the reporting is biased.

sweetkitty · 28/05/2022 22:06

Totally agree it’s such great fun needing opiates to get out of bed and function everyday.
