We've just had a really excellent Christmas Day......My SIL arrived in a strop, got all huffy when asked for basic manners (to wait until everyone was seated before pulling crackers etc) whereupon she huffed 'I may as well leave' to which DH said 'OK'... door opened - she stomped off.

Afterwards, everyone breathed a huge sigh of relief and had an excellent time.

I feel slightly guilty whilst secretly pleased...

Hope everyone had a splendid time!!

Ours was freakishly good. Only one time out for DS (who has been a git for weeks), everyone happy, and only a minor sulk from my sister when I bought her DP something she had (you MUST NOT DEVIATE FROM THE LIST)

mamasmissionimpossible · 25/12/2009 22:16

Ours was great, at home with family. Ds through a strop, but overall good fun.

Stinkyfeet · 25/12/2009 22:20

Ds2 (3.10) had a full screaming meltdown because his Yorkshire Pudding was too crispy to stick his fork into!! Possibly sugar and tiredness overload.

i think after you have spent an xmas in a hospital you appreciate the ones after all the more....we had such a long time in hospital with DS and it was all over xmas and new year and since then ive pleased ourselves, never compromised a christmas and ive loved everyone ever since.

i love christmas! nothing gets me down about christmas. i refuse to let it!

TipsyFairydifferentID · 25/12/2009 22:30

it has been a lovely day. May there be many more.

choosyfloosy · 25/12/2009 22:43

Wonderful Christmas Day - just us. It went Breakfast, Lego, Bike Ride, Lego, Hot Wheels, Leftovers Lunch, Lego, Fast Bike Ride, Incredibles, Lego, Lego, Lego, Cheese, Lego, Bed. And now Iplayer. Life doesn't get much better.

Christmas Eve rather strained but the Big Lunch was darn good though I say it myself.

expatinscotland · 25/12/2009 22:46

True, Vicar!

I spent Xmas in hospital one time. I was married, but it was before I had any kids.

I was 25 and had gotten flu a couple of weeks before and went back to work too soon.

I got terrible pneumonia and was still so weak and ill on Xmas day.

It sucked.

Ever since then, Xmas is special no matter what!

Am now MNing and sipping some herbal Sleepytime tea.

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 25/12/2009 22:46

We have had a lovley day (apart from me and dd being poorly and me going faint during opening the presents but some fig rolls got me through)
been really relaxed and dinner all went well. Dr who was cool! dh and dd loved their presents

snickersnack · 25/12/2009 22:56

Such a lovely day here. Dh currently being thrashed by my 68 year old mother on the Wii Tennis, to general hilarity. Dd told me the Sylvanian Families caravan was the best present she could ever have imagined. All food delicious, everyone happy and we get to do it tomorrow again with the in-laws. Only downer was when I sliced the top off my finger peeling parsnips.

We had a lovely day.

The DCs woke me up at 6.30am and got lots of amazing presents they were all happy with although despite her huge pile dd2 (6) wasn't happy she didn't get the crappy cupcake maker she wanted (shame that) but she got over it.

We had my Gran, Mum, her fella and the in-laws over for dinner and DH cooked it

The only downside was that poor MIL wasn't herself at all, she has secondary bone cancer and has been really brave about it but we could all see that things are taking their toll by looking at her face and how quiet she was... still at least she was there. She didn't make it last year due to being in the middle of chemo and really ill.

CardyMow · 25/12/2009 23:48

Had a brilliant day, no meltdowns or anything. (which may just be a first ever, and I don't just mean at Christmas either, with 2 asd dc's...). . 6yo DS2 didn't even get upset with his playmobil not being 'perfect' (we cant work out how to do the ruddy moss....lol). Only downside is the whole family has been made to play uno moo more times than I thought was possible...(and I lost every game!).

JingleAllTheWay · 25/12/2009 23:58

It has been lovely although I have eaten too much. Lovely nosh and gifts. Downside is the outlaws sorry I mean inlaws are coming for lunch tomorrow. Only 3 minutes of Christmas day left!!

JingleAllTheWay · 25/12/2009 23:59

I don't mean I ate too many gifts!

MitchyInge · 26/12/2009 00:03

really really nice, despite (or maybe because of) working for a few hours this morning

going to pub for lunch was such a good idea, although our table got a bit rowdy and we went through far too many bottles of poor champagne and my head is throbbing a bit now

MitchyInge · 26/12/2009 00:05

sorry to laugh at OP's relative (grown up, presumably?) being told off for breach of cracker etiquette tho - was that whole thing for real? she opened a cracker too soon and left? what did they do for lunch then?

StayingSantasGirl · 26/12/2009 00:53

We've had a good day here too - only one meltdown (over setting up ds3's iPod), but that was easily outweighed by the fun of the day - the boys didn't wake us up until 8.30am, and everyone liked what was in their stockings.

Following a big fry-up brunch, we all went out to a local loch and walked the dog - it was so beautiful - snowy, crisp, sunny, the loch was frozen over and we all had a great time throwing tennis balls for the dog.

Then christmas cake and a cuppa, followed by presents early afternoon - and it was so lovely seeing what the dses had chosen for eachother and for us. Ds3 had bought a cheap (though not to him) little mp3 player for ds1, and ds1 was so touched by this - it almost brought a tear.

Christmas dinner went well, and for once I got the timing of the roast potatoes and parsnips absolutely right (totally by accident, I have to admit), and was delicious.

Dr Who (recorded) was scary and cliff-hangery, and gave us an excellent pause for digestion before the Christmas pud.

Best bit - being out with all the family in the sun, playing with the dog amid all that lovely scenary.

Oh, and it was snowing when we got up to do stockings, and it is snowing again now - the first ever Christmas when I've actually had snow fall (though I have had one or two where there's been snow on the ground).

Kbear · 26/12/2009 09:20

The kbears had a lovely day, morning the usual chaos of present opening and bacon sarnies, then off to mum and dad's down the road for lunch and a relaxed afternoon playing Cluedo (how complicated can it BE? Hilarious non-comprehension of rules by me and my parents - DH patiently explaining every time someone took a turn!)

Lovely news also, DBruv and his lovely girlfriend announced their engagement and asked my DD to be bridesmaid (sob with joy!).

Today am full of cold but it gives me the perfect excuse not to stay too long at MIL's!

aarghhelp · 26/12/2009 09:40

well it hasn't all gone to plan...

MIL arrived from miles away in the middle of the cold and ice on the 23rd - awful delayed journey. Weather too bad to do some of the things we had planned.

I cut my finger open on kitchen equipment Christmas Eve so had to go to A and E instead of taking DS to Christingle service.

So I was cooking Xmas dinner with a bandaged left hand.

I got the time of the Xmas day service wrong so we only got 2 carols worth. (mind you, some upsides to that).

DS 19 months decided to throw a wobbly that involved lying down, outside the church. He lay down in the gloopiest puddle of mud he could find. Cue mud all over his fairly nice clothes and my bandaged hand.

Then at Xmas dinner he decided

  1. he will not eat in his highchair
  2. he will only eat sitting on mummy's lap
  3. he will only eat stuffing
  4. he must feed himself this
(mummy completly covered on food therefore). He repeated this at teatime (with different food).

So things not absolutely to plan.

But I am so so happy to be here with my family round me, magic

Now, off to A and E to get said bandage changed...

Time2Hibernate · 26/12/2009 12:50

Arghhelp - I think you need a large brandy and a pat on the back!! Sounds like real festive cheer!
