Do any of you dress your children up for Christmas?

I mean to play in, like as snowmen, stars etc.

My 3 y o loves dress up, and has a snowman costume, a star and a sheep costume.

My baby has a snowman suit and a santa suit. I know some people don't like them, but I think they look cute.

Ah, you were being facetious! I really did miss the point there!

Seems to be a divisive and contentious topic here, yikes!

because a party dress is generally something just a bit smarter than normal and special for the occasion whereas a christmas pudding outfit, for example, is neither of those! it's just a bit weird.

Oh well, I was naf, but then I am quite naf.

(have you seen my bag?

DD loves the pics of her dressed up, though she'd kill me if I even suggested it now.

She wants to wear her new jumper dress (which I chose) on Christmas day.

It's harmless and they so look cute.
I could understand the outrage if it was dressing them like Hitler, or Myra Hindley or some such, but Santa/Rudolph/A Star?

thatsnotmymonster · 20/12/2009 22:49

Lol Hellzapoppin, I like it... like a novelty costume and straight jacket all in one so you can get some rest on Christmas day and not worry about your LO wrecking the place

Personally, I dress them up in lovely smart/party clothes. Usually ds likes to wear his kilt and the dd's lovely party dresses.

My DP has bought her a santa hat for her to wear, he also bought her an apron to wear in an elf-style way....thing is she has just started crawling so will end up choking herself it so long...I have told him that he will have wear it himself....to which, he started adjusting straps and making it fit just so....He also bought a hat for himself, asking if I wanted one too..(no, I bloody don't!)

Have to point out here, this is a man who wouldn't usually in a novelty manner in any sort of way usually, but he is very far away from the rest of his family and it is his 1st with our DD and my SIL family at hers.....

I am very about this but more over in his excitement about it all rather than it being a bit naff...I will enjoy an alcohol induced laughter and have told him I will pay him if he adds a cotton wool beard to look like santa claus!!

Oh yes, I persuade mine to dress up every year. This year, DD is appearing as a christmas pudding and DS is appearing as a mince pie. But it doesn't stop with the children. Oh no. Anyone who invites themselves over to us at christmas (10+ unwanted guests this year) has to dress up as elves. DH and I are Mr and Mrs Christmas of course.

NightShoe · 21/12/2009 08:41

DD has chosen a red velvet party dress for Christmas. I think that everyone is making a similar point here - we wouldn't stop our child dressing up but we wouldn't make them for our own gratification either.

pagwatch · 21/12/2009 08:53

I am not terribly keen on the child as an accessory/decoration idea. It is a bit twee Anne Geddes for me. Great in a photo or in a coffee table book but a bit naff in real life.

I like my children to be clean and dressed and they tend to adopt the 'smart/party' atmosphere. But they choose.

The only way I would be able to get my dd into some sort of costume would be with chloroform. She is 8.7 now and has had very definite ideas about what she will wear since the age of about 2.6 - this year she will be wearing leggings I imagine.

Ds will always wear a christmassy jumper something like this
DD usally gets a nice dress she has a red one this year

AliBellandthe40jingles · 21/12/2009 18:03

DS will be wearing smart clothes, I find pudding/star etc costumes all very sickly - plus they tend to be made out of vile polyester stuff which I wouldn't wear myself never mind put on my PFB!

FWIW I also shudder a little when I see little tiny girls in overly princess-y dresses and little boys in suits with ties. Makes them look like dolls IMO.

pagwatch · 21/12/2009 18:05

But sometimes we have to embrace the naff..

princessmel · 21/12/2009 18:15

dd and ds1 will wear something new they'll get for christmas , as a present.
I will have picked out a smart dress/outfit but they'll choose to wear their new stuff I'm sure.
ds2 (8 weeks) has 3 different outfits to wear (gifts). A santa suit , and lots of christmassy babygro's.

chegirlwithbellson · 21/12/2009 21:32

I was inspired by this thread to go out and buy a Father Christmas all in one.

Tis sooo cute.

Ner.

serinBrightside · 21/12/2009 21:38

Mine wear whatever they like, it's Christmas,
We have turned up at Mass on Christmas morning as Batman and Robin, Power rangers and Cinderella more than once (and that was only me and DH).

Quattrocento · 21/12/2009 22:30

I wasn't being entirely serious about dressing up on christmas day ...

evensunnierdelight · 22/12/2009 05:21

No, it's too hot I'm aiming for swimmers and a sarong all day.

nooka · 22/12/2009 06:55

I always buy my guys new clothes for Christmas, but they are just nice clothes that I know (hope!) they will like and then wear many times again. I think it's a bit daft to buy something so themed it can only be worn once, and for babies, yes very naff. that said my children enjoy dressing up, but according to their own devising (dd today found a pair of curtains at her friends house and they were busy being Greek priestesses when I came to pick them up )
