I sent DH for a Christmas tree, and he comes home telling me that he was going to have to pay £40 for a little 4 foot one, and it didn't seem worth it.

I only saw really falorn litle trees in Home base today, so can believe him.

We do have access to a great big fake one...but fake goes against my principles.

Where have all the trees gone?

What, every tree gone in the whole of the country? Wow!
get your fake one out - why does it go against your principles? I have a fake one and it's a friendly reunion when it gets dragged out of the loft year after year!
No living thing gets cut down for my fake tree!

Loads in our market on Saturday. No roots mind you. We haven't got ours yet btw.

islandofsodor · 20/12/2009 16:12

We bought one last weekend for £25 and it was the cheapest we could get. Homebase were a total rip off, the cheapest was £40 and they wern't that good.

We went to B & Q in the end.

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 20/12/2009 16:17

They only had the (more expensive) Norman(d?) Pine in the place in town. £29.99 and a decent size - no roots though

cassell · 20/12/2009 16:20

got ours yesterday, a 4ft one for £25 at a local shop and they had a good selection left. All the big places (wyevale etc) I looked in were about £40 for measly looking ones.

GloriaInEccentrica · 20/12/2009 16:21

There are about a million in Hungerford Garden centre.

LynetteScavo · 20/12/2009 16:45

So they are all in Hungerford.

I did hear there was a shortage this year, not sure why that is though

BigBadMummy · 20/12/2009 16:54

Loads in Farnham and Fleet.

Wineonafridaynight · 20/12/2009 17:16

Not sure about a shortage but I can tell you that all the garden centres I went to (3) were charging a ridiculous amount!

SantaClausImWorthIt · 20/12/2009 17:21

Bought mine yesterday; 6-7 ft, non-drop, £30. From a pitch in the Co-op car park - they sell them there every year and they're always good. They had loads - but mainly because another seller had given up and passed on his stock to them.

NorbertDentressAngel · 20/12/2009 17:23

When we bought ours last weekend, which I thought was early, the farmer said he had sold nearly 400 the previous weekend.

The non-needle dropping ones had all gone but as we know him he said that DP and DD could go into the field and cut their own one down -bargain at £15!

We saw identical ones in a garden centre the following day for £40+

Pollyanna · 20/12/2009 17:26

not many left in Brighton - dh was driving around for ages today and only found a dropping one which is a pretty pathetic specimen.

OrmIrian · 20/12/2009 17:29

Got a lovely one yesterday. From a christmas tree growers. But even there they admit they had got through most of their stock.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 20/12/2009 17:31

we got loads in our village ther eis a christmas tree farm here £35 for a 9ft'er

where are you?

Jux · 20/12/2009 19:47

I heard on R4 a few days ago that there's a shortage of the non-drops, but haven't heard anything else.

Still haven't got ours. Guess it'll be pine needles 'til June for us then!

Crazycatlady · 20/12/2009 20:03

There are loads in south London. Many of the good floristry design shops have pitches outside and I drove past two Christmas Tree shops in Putney today that still had a reasonable stock.

I got in a panic last week when I heard there was a shortage, but we had no trouble finding a non-drop tree, it's only 5ft but it's a lovely tree, one of the nicest we've ever had, from the florist at the top of the road for £20.

JACKIEwrappingPAPER · 20/12/2009 20:07

well plenty at the christmas tree farm roud the corner from us. paid £35 for a 5 &1/2 footer

Jux · 21/12/2009 20:45

JACKIE please tell me you live in the village up from ours. That's where we're going tomorrow to get ours!

ja9 · 21/12/2009 20:53

loads of real ones in our homebase today...

Flightattendant · 21/12/2009 20:56

Wow - I went to homebase, wyevale etc to look, and saw they were all £39.99 so went to local nursery and got a rooted one for £16. I resented paying that much tbh but at least we have a shot at another year's worth out of it.

B&Q were giving them away for free the other day, if you spent £30.
