We have all my family for xmas and overnight and then on 28th my oldest friend is coming to stay for a few days. This will be low key and not frantic at all.On NYE ds (15)is invited to his first nye party ever and dp and I both agreed we would stay home cook a really lovely meal just the 2 of us and not go out apart from collect ds at 1.We are invited to a couple of things but don't want to go!Is it odd to stay home all our friends are !

As people get older, have children etc, NYE's tend to change. We used to have really wild ones and know it's just too logistically difficult to get everyone together as all our friends live all over the country.

I quite like staying in on NYE now!

sounds fine Noddy, NYE is always a bit of a let-down anyway IME. It's always expensive, transport is a nightmare, I'm all for the romantic-dinner-for-two idea.

In fact DP and I might be doing the same!

tulpe · 20/12/2009 12:45

We usually spend NYE at home too. We always make an effort - dress up (usually black tie ), lovely meal and fab wine and champagne. Crank up the music and spend the evening together. I love it and look forward to it each year

Last year we broke with tradition and went out for dinner. The food was beautiful but we ended up leaving early in order to get home to bring in the NY with just the two of us! It just wasn't the same.

I am looking forward to it too! Will def dress up light the fire and just chill! We have lots of plans for next year and it will be nice to really talk everything through with no interruptions!Feel a bit of a boring old fart but we are exhausted already and its not even xmas yet!

I very rarely go anywhere NYE I'll sometimes go down to my sisters with the kids for a few days because I'll hardly see hubby from now until about 4th of January its his busiest time of the year Christmas and new year.

Me and DH are doing this and have done for a few years, for the opposite reason to OP, our DCs are little.

My ILs are our sitters but they will ony sit if its at their house as they are having friends round. It just would feel strange waking up on New Years Day without the DCs in the house.

We have plenty of wild NYE over the years, I don't miss it.

Hulababy · 20/12/2009 13:07

No, we have done the same before and it has been lovely.

This year we are invited to a friend's house for dinner and we are going there, although will get taxi home just after midnight.

I do think most NYE stuff is over rated and there is too much pressure for it to be a good night.

jobhuntersrus · 20/12/2009 13:08

Sounds lovely. We have made no plans as usual so will be staying in. Will try and stay awake to see the new year in but will probably fall asleep on the sofa.
I like the idea of doing something more interesting but it is tricky while the kids are young.

mmelindt · 20/12/2009 13:09

We are doing the same. There is a party on in the village but then one of us would have to drive, or we would have to carry exhausted (probably sleeping) DC home at about 1am. It is almost 2km away so not keen on that.

We normally put the DC to bed at the normal time, after a nice meal then waken them at midnight for fireworks.

Love the 'no pressure'feeling could get used to it.Dp over the moon and keeps saying well I am nearly 50 as if he somehow has the right now to give up the ghost!
