ADingDongDandyChristmasLioness · 18/12/2009 22:30

I would like to buy a board game that DH, DD and I can play together on Christmas Day.

I'm lookking for something that is appropriate for DD but not deathly tedious for DH and I. DD is 5 in Feb.

Ta muchly.

ds was recently given a kids charades game, which seems really good. He has just turned 6 so can actually read the cards, but there are pictures on the cards too. You just have to act out an animal or action. (I hate normal charades but this is about my level!)

thatsnotmymonster · 18/12/2009 22:48

My 4yo (5 in March) can play Guess Who and Snakes and Ladders.

Other ones I am thinking of getting him are Connect 4, Hungry Hippos and Frustration.

Not technically board games but similar.

He has just got into them and really enjoys it!

jkklpu · 18/12/2009 22:50

snakes and ladders?
ludo/sorry?
guess who? (though it's for only 2 people)
Orchard toys do some great things, but depends on your dd's interests, really here

junior monopoly or draughts

sanfairyann · 18/12/2009 23:07

another vote for junior monopoly.

we also like the 'living and learning' games - not exactly all traditional boardgames but ones like the 'sounds' game are good fun for that age. you all listen to a cd of animal noises for example and match them to the pictures on your board. the winner is the first to match all his/her pictures

snice · 18/12/2009 23:11

ANOTHER vote for Junior Monopoly-much bettere than proper Monopoly IMO which is the dullest game ever

kimlouiseb · 18/12/2009 23:11

Don't Wake Dad is a nice simple one - my DS's love it (age 3 and 5) and it doesn't go on for hours.

We also like (although not technically board games:
Piranha Panic
Hungry Hippos
Loopin Louie

And have bought Downfall for my 5 yr old DS this year.

displayuntiltwelfthnight · 18/12/2009 23:24

I had forgotten Don't Wake Dad - that's a great one that younger siblings can join in with too (although my youngest ds jumps everytime the dad wakes up!)

I got quirkle for my 5yo this year. I've never played it but he has played at a friends house and liked it. His friend (goes caravanning, has lots of games) loves Bendominoes which his mother says is really good when dcs and adults are playing together.

Fizzylemonade · 19/12/2009 07:38

Another vote for Piranha Panic, game of chance and easy for little ones as you only have to count to 2.

Frustration is good but can go on forever!!! We start with one man already out and then you have to get a 6 for the others to get them out. Otherwise your child is watching you go round the board whilst waiting for a 6.

Hungry Hippos VERY noisy

We are getting Twister this year (well we will be if we can dig our way out of the snow) that might be too lively though!

ELC did do a animal bingo which was listening to noises, very good game.

monkeysmama · 19/12/2009 10:22

There is a beautiful game by the guy who wrote the Hungry Catepillar.

thanks all, there's some great suggestions here

Now I'm trying to narrow it down to just one or two!

A bit late joining this thread but wanted to second junior monopoly and also to highly recommend ker plunk. Not a traditional board game but lots of fun for all

ADingDongDandyChristmasLioness · 21/12/2009 14:08

I've chosen junior monopoly and bendominoes; not only because they look good but because I could order them online through amazon in time for Christmas! We already play a children's card version of dominoes, so this will be a good step up.

I'd forgotton that we have a good children's charades game, so thanks to whoever suggested that. God knows what else we've got lurking in the cupboard ... We got the charades for DD a few years ago and she would use the pictures. But now she can read a bit, I'll dig it out again and we'll use the word cards.

I'll bear all the other suggestions in mind for birthdays and for when dc2 is older

Bit late now but Orchard Toys have great games for young childrn-Amazon have quite a range of them.

ADingDongDandyChristmasLioness · 21/12/2009 18:20

Thanks - we have the Shopping Trolley game by Orchard which DD loves but DH and I are bored of! looking forward to junior monopoly.

Yes Junior Monopoly is a favourite with all the children I know. So is Pop to the Shops (Orchard, I think) - they seem to like the money aspect

TheGoddessBlossom · 21/12/2009 20:14

I know it's not a board game per se but my 5 year old LOVES LOVES LOVES Jenga....and is also irritatingly good at it...

When we play as a family, even our 3 year old can join in so it's a winner here (although we do relax the "one hand" rule with him...I mean it is Christmas.)

tispity · 21/12/2009 22:13

BigJessie - we have ker plunk (second hand). although you prob think it's quite obvious how to play, we don't have instructions. prob is that the marbles don't seem to stay in the top part at the start; is there a special straw-weaving technique i don't know about?

BigJessie · 22/12/2009 09:54

Tispity there is a bit that looks like a test tube that needs to go upside down inside the helter skelter marble run bit. I think that may help? I just weave the straws any which way but make sure they are woven otherwise they fall out whilst you are still putting others in.

tispity · 22/12/2009 21:00

thanks - i thin i know what you are talking about. trieda tighter weave today and managed to contain the marbles. still don't get the way in which the marbles fall down randomly into the four sections at the bottom though; regardless of which player is pulling the straws (sorry- probably so obvious to you; you are probably thinking that i should stick to jack in the boxes in future!

BigJessie · 24/12/2009 09:12

Lol at jack in the box - they can be tricky too
No they don't fall into the 4 sections, there is a chute down inoto the gulley at the edge. The player who knocked them down puts them into their section. I think maybe you don't have enough straws at the start?? Have just counted ours, we have 24.
Hope you get it sorted, it's a fun game which even my 3yo likes (except she wants to get as many marbles as poss!)

tispity · 24/12/2009 13:06

well i am not seeing a chute of any description; grrr that's charity shop purchases for you. perhaps i'll get the dcs to make one as a holiday activity!!
