Mother thinks floral dry Gewurztraminer. Do you concur wine experts? And any particular recommendations?

Goose is very rich. I would go with a light-bodied red wine rather than white. But if I was to drink white, I would go for drier than Gewurz and choose a chablis or Sauvignon Blanc.

But what do I know. Goose is yummy BTW.

WilfSell · 17/12/2009 22:29

Chablis. Yes, dry and flinty, right?

Yes. Fresh and quite dry.

I second a medium bodied red like a burgundian style pinot noir or a nebbiolo based wine (Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo d'Alba).

Goose is a very rich tasting bird, and most whites just aren't strong enough to match well.

I would also go for red I think - maybe something like a smooth but spicy Merlot, the Californians make some v.nice ones!

Waiting to hear Lenin's confession...

miumiu · 18/12/2009 17:15

If you are going for a red, Sociando-Mallet 2005 is a totally stunning Medoc that would go brilliantly with goose.

Yum.

Alternatively, an acidic white, something with a gooseberry slant, would do the trick - such as a good, recent vintage Sauvignon Blanc?

miumiu · 18/12/2009 17:24

here and swoon

The demoiselle, same vintage is also very good but cheaper, if you can find it....

aseriouslyblondemoment · 18/12/2009 17:25

i would choose a cru beaujolais such as cote de brouilly and a big rich burgundy like chassagne montrachet
new world would look to california for one of their chardonnays or pinot noirs

You may already have bought but...

My "which wine with which food" book recommends a "big, burly cabernet or shiraz", esp from Australia, or a big Rhone wine such as Hermitages or Chateauneuf du pape.

If it has to be white, they say a Gewurz or a Pniot Gris will do it.

We had goose last year- I was ill so didn't really indulge in the wine but my dad bought a bottle of Beaune (burgundy) which he seemed to think went very well.

Pendulum · 19/12/2009 11:51

Should have added: Beaune = white burgundy
