I've just been told I'm providing the crackers for our family christmas dinner - any recommendations?

Oh heavens, crackers are a minefield. We get seduced into buying expensive ones so the crap goodies inside are actually worth having. I have had the occasional pen or somesuch that is OK, but there are only so many sets of mini screwdrivers that anyone can need or want.
A couple of years ago, I made my own (from a cracker kit) and added good chocs and a scratchcard. These were a huge success, but quite hard work as those DIY crackers never really go together very well, IYKWIM.
We have Tescos family crackers this year - 12 in a pack, 6 adult and 6 kids. Probably dreadful as they were only £8, but with all the other stuff going on, they are fine with me.

mini pink ones from paperchase.

Crackers really are a pointless waste of money aren't they?

arolf · 17/12/2009 20:29

total waste of money, but essential for christmas dinner! i just don't know where to get them from - will probably end up at sainsburies though! just wondered if there were any really good ones recommended

Ever since ds saw Ooglies on TV he's had a thing about sprouts ...so when I saw sprouts crackers in Hawkins I had to buy them. Each cracker has a wind up sprout in it, a board is provided, and you race your sprouts along the board

jeep · 17/12/2009 20:31

they are all awful. i would like the small screwdriver set but i never ever get them anymore.

Ohforfoxsake · 17/12/2009 20:33

Lidl for the adults - eyelash curlers and the like. £5 for 6 I think. Love Lidl

Paperchase for the kids - the ones with the jumping figures so they can all have a race.

So glad i saw this thread - I was in Fortnum and Mason yesterday admiring their crackers - £1,000 for a box of six. Didn't even say you what was in them - just said "a superior gift"!!!! Came home and got a reduced pack in Tesco for £3.45.

nancy75 · 17/12/2009 20:34

we usually get the debenhams, £20 reduced to £10 ones, they are always ok

arolf · 17/12/2009 20:42

a grand for 6 crackers? bloody hell!

the sprouts ones sounds good, shall look out for them - never heard of hawkins though. goes off to google

scratchcard is BRILLIANT idea

hocuspontas · 17/12/2009 20:50

We had the sprouts ones the year before last and were good for a laugh.

Last year I got some from Waitrose that had a different pitched whistle in each cracker. In the box was a song sheet and you had to blow your own whistle in the right places. We did a fantastic 'Jingle Bells' between us even though I say it myself

jeep · 17/12/2009 20:51

thank you for lidl tip!

hocuspontas · 17/12/2009 20:52

I might do the scratchcard ones!

Instead of making your own just buy cheap supermarket ones and take out the tat.

posey · 17/12/2009 21:00

hocuspontas I think we're on a wavelength here we did the whistles ones last year!

DillieTantie · 17/12/2009 21:01

Hocus, Why didn't I think of that?

morningpaper · 17/12/2009 21:06

I've just picked up some make-your-own kids from Early Learning Centre for about £1.50 for six

morningpaper · 17/12/2009 21:06

KITS

not kids

obviously most people make their own kids

hocuspontas · 17/12/2009 21:50

So how are you going to top the sprouts and whistles this year posey? I need some ideas! The scratchcards are the best suggestion so far.

fin54 · 18/12/2009 08:46

I always make my own crackers, in the past I have put silly knickers in them, key rings, lip glosses. All small things that you see in the shops, I always have a scratch card @ each place setting on the table makes it a little bit more exciting

TheShowMustGoOn · 18/12/2009 08:53

I've got some empty ones from muji - not sure what to put in them yet.

inchhighprivateeye · 18/12/2009 09:05

Aldi have some lovely looking ones in gold & silver. I got the Xmassy red & green - about a fiver for 12. It's pointless paying more, I've even used ultra cheapola ones from Poundland in the past. It's not like the jokes get any better if you pay more.

biscuitbear · 18/12/2009 09:22

Waitrose have put your own thing in too for 5quid a box.
