Not having turkey for Christmas dinner

MamaFi · 17/12/2009 13:05

and if you're not what are you having?

We're having home-made parsnip soup then big prawns and smoked salmon then 10oz fillet steaks / potato dauphinoise / veg finished off with a massive belgian chocolate yule log and posh ice cream.

Are we bonkers... are we the only ones in the world not having turkey? Turkey meat/cranberry sauce/stuffing etc isn't my idea of a treat... I'm guessing I'm in the minority.??!!

Turkey is over-rated as a food, IMHO. I'm also concerned about the welfare of intensively farmed turkey, with only a very small percentage not being factory-farmed.

We'll be having something seafoody as a started then beef wellington, then (DP willing) tiramisu trifle for the grownups and not sure what yet for the kids. Probably an indecent amount of Haribos stuck on a cake.

crumblequeen · 17/12/2009 13:54

Your menu sounds yummy! Not a turkey fan either, or Christmas pudding for that matter!

We are having roast beef rib with homemade horseradish cream, honey glazed carrot and parsnip and then my first attempt at homemade trifle, with cheeses later when DS in bed if there is room!

Iklboodolphtherednosereindeer · 17/12/2009 13:56

Smoked salmon with lemon & cracked black pepper creme fraiche & wholemeal bread

A piece of beef and a piece of lamb
The usual trimmings for a Sunday roast

Then either cheesecake, gateau or fruit strudel & posh ice cream for pud

After Eights

Coffee

Brandy (for me & DH, not DS obviously)

Ewe · 17/12/2009 13:56

I can't stand turkey, just think it's a bit tasteless and a poor man's chicken.

We're having goose, nom nom, with roast pots, leeks in a white sauce and some other yet to be decided veg.

ThumbleBells · 17/12/2009 13:58

We are having goose for the 3rd year running. Tis lovely. With roast potatoes (in goose fat of course), sprouts, carrots, mushrooms, gravy, possibly broccoli and other veg - NO Bread sauce .
And then homemade Christmas pudding with whipped double cream for afters.

Stinkyfeet · 17/12/2009 14:04

We're having lamb as it's the family favourite.

stealthsquiggle · 17/12/2009 14:05

I want turkey. DH wants goose.

..so we are having beef - nice big rib of beef which will then last us in various forms until New Year.

BikeRunSnowflake · 17/12/2009 14:12

I'm vege. DH not bothered about turkey, as long as he has Chrimbo pud. DS onl;y 15 months old.

We'll be having Mexican as has become our Christmas tradition.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 17/12/2009 14:13

Goose, rib of beef and ham, and lovely left overs for a few days.

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 17/12/2009 14:26

We're having a really lovely big organic chicken. Would love to have beef but the dc don't like it. But we are sticking with Christmas pud and mince pies.

PurpleEglu · 17/12/2009 14:30

We are having beef from a local farm. It is delicious and will be enjoyed much more than turkey.

SantaIsMyLoveSlave · 17/12/2009 14:32

Proper free range roaming-in-woodland turkey is quite nice, but I'm still not a huge fan.

We often have goose, but this year we're at my mother's and having venison.

shinyshoes · 17/12/2009 14:36

salmon and dill moussey thing that i've yet to get from M and S, its been recommended to me.

Rib of beef with all the trimmings.

Dont know about dessert, don't know if we could fit it in

BunnyLebowski · 17/12/2009 14:36

Turkey is boke.

We're having dressed lobster with king prawns followed by Beef Wellington with goose fat roasties and my special cabbage/bacon/cream dish.

And about 5 different desserts and 7 different wines

Plutothatpresentdown · 17/12/2009 14:44

M&S party bite stuff for starters followed by beef wellington from local posh shop with usual trimmings, ice cream for pudding for DCs, Xmas pud and brandy butter for grown ups.

MamaFi · 17/12/2009 17:13

Mmmm loving the beef wellington idea. That's really special and gorgeous, may do that instead. Do you do that yourself or ready prepared? Our farm shop must do a nice one.

My mum does a lovely cabbage/bacon/cream dish too! Forgot about that.

Even worse, in my house my boys (2 and 4) are having those M&S chicken christmas trees! They haven't been allowed them yet as I'm keeping them special for Christmas Day - they will eat their body weight in mince pies before dinner anyway. Keeping it nice and easy for Mummy!

DP asked me to make profiteroles, I almost fell off my chair "CHOUX PASTRY!!! I am NOT a pastry chef." That would so stress me out.

Buying a lovely big choccy log and will make a lime cheesecake.

This is all sounding lovely! The 5 puds/7 wines sounds like heaven - can I come to your house?

I'm very of everyone who's broken the trad mould and is not having turkey. I hate the bloody stuff! DH is a staunch traddie though and can't countenance Christmas without the stuff. Thank god that PIL haven't given us one of their own reared birds this year, because it was always huge and lasted months - every time I went to the freezer there was this massive side of dry, unappetising breastmeat staring up at me.

If I had my own way, we'd have beef.

HaveYourselfAMummyPigChristmas · 17/12/2009 17:27

we are having duck for the second year running. trad veg: roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips and sprouts because everyone except ds1 loves sprouts. and homemade Christmas pud afterwards. it will be lovely and it will be just enough rather than far too much.

i don't really mind turkey. If I'm doing that I order really early and get a good organic Kelly bronze and use Nigel/Nigella's instructions so it is cooked properly and not overdone. but it is only dp and me and the kids this year and I have 'done' the big turkey dinner many times and we all like duck .

Hulababy · 17/12/2009 17:29

No turkey here too. I never do turkey.

DH and 7y DD are sharing a chateaubriand. I think I am having mushroom wellington.

MrsMattie · 17/12/2009 17:35

I couldnt not have turkey, but your dinner does sound lovely@MamaFi

agalchchangedhername · 17/12/2009 17:55

No turkey for me again!!

Out for dinner to local (2 min walk) lovely Indian. Food is fab. The dd's will however order turkey and trimmings off the menu as they are not keen on curry

Prob wont manage a pudding as portions there are huge.
