Can someone explain why shredded tissue paper costs soooo much?

Making Dp's Step Mum a hamper this year filled with stuff she likes.

Wanted to buy some shredded tissue paper to fill bottom of hamper, as you do, and its blinking extortionate.

It's just shredded tissue paper - why does it cost 3pound for 50g
I haven't got a clue about how much I would need, but it appears it will cost a lot!

On another note - how easy is it to do your own?

no idea always bugs me too.. you could go rustic and use straw .. small bag of it from the local pet shop.. or go all kirty on it and spray straw gold or silver.

Ooooh never thought of that
Will it smell funny?

It's been years since I had a rabbit to give straw to....and I can't remember

Buy tissue paper and put it through a paper shredder??

Or, scrunched up newspaper??

Antdamm · 17/12/2009 13:21

I don't have a shredder unfortunately,a dn I don't know anyone who does.

Scrunched up paper, might look nice actually, and if it doesn't - I could always say that was DS's contribution

I think the key is to create the shape you need out of newspaper or any old paper, and then lay a few sheets of tissue paper over it and tuck it in so nobody knows that only the top layer is pretty. Or you could shred your own, but make sure the shredder doesn't do what mine does and actually cut the paper into tiny diamonds!

OMG, or you can do what Lush do in their gift boxes and use popcorn! I think that's bloody genius - natural, cheap, biodegradable, provides good padding and lightweight!

nickelbabyjesus · 17/12/2009 15:02

shame you're in ireland - i've got about 80 boxes full of those polystyrene foam peanut shapes that would have been useful to you.

garciasangria · 17/12/2009 17:22

Seriously, popcorn....REAL popcorn? Does it not smell?
.....wondering as have a few bits to put on ebay soon, and rather not have to buy bubble wrap, but do have popcorn kernels.

potplant · 17/12/2009 17:27

I like the popcorn in Lush stuff - don't try to eat it though, it tastes of soap. I'm not sure how much of a protector it is though.

gagamama · 17/12/2009 17:29

Well I tried eating the Lush popcorn and it just tasted of soap, but I'm fairly sure it's just standard plain popcorn without anything added to it.

Thanks for the replies ladies

Some great ideas here.

Will try out popcorn and the hay and see what they are like.

Thank you
