DH is doing duck here. Have tested twice and its yummy - and quick. Last year he did lamb - a recipe from one of the Jamie Oliver books I think.

mumwhereareyou · 15/12/2009 21:02

DH wants homemade steak pie, DC all want lasange(sp) and i'm doing roast beef.

Pudding is Trifle and Golden syrup icecream.

We are not big fans of turkey and dislike christmas cake and pudding.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 16/12/2009 08:40

Goose here.

That was a bit short, goose, lamb chops and a ribeye of beef for boxing day. All sitting in the freezer taking up valuable icecube room.

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 16/12/2009 08:43

was going to have goose - but went to butcher to find out the cost and he told me not to bother - reckons you don't much meat for your money, and unless I wanted a years supply of goose fat to save money and buy something cheaper.........

Haven't yet decided what...have seen mention of the Aldi 3 bird roast on here several times so might give that a go.

goose here - i agree you dont get as much meat for your money as a turkey but it tastes so much nicer.

MIL makes it but before she puts it in the oven she takes out a lot of the fat - you just out your hand under the skin and scoop it out. Otherwise oyu'll spend all xmas morning draining fat out the roasting tin!

she serves it with special german potato dumplings and veg! yum!

(kids hate it though so they're having sausages!)

kreecherlivesupstairs · 16/12/2009 08:54

I've never done goose before and having read that bit about hand under skin fat removal, I suspect dh will be getting greasy fingers.

Portofino · 16/12/2009 08:56

I have in the freezer a duckling stuffed with forestiere mushrooms. I will do with roast potatoes, parsnips and whatever posh ready prepared veg I find in the supermarket next week. And yorkshire puddings as dd loves them. Don't know about desert yet....

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 16/12/2009 09:06

well butcher suggested I didn't bother as he didn't rate the meat much either - so I shan't fork out all that money for a bird that will only last for Christmas day

And well - comparing to turkey is silly as that's just "meh" it's ok but nothing special - haven't had a turkey for Christmas since, ermm - oh yeah - will be 10yrs when my FIL (of 2 weeks - as we got married just before Christmas) gave us a gift of the biggest bloody turkey I have seen in my LIFE.

Thankfully my mum was staying with us at the time and help me joint it just so I could fit it in the oven to cook.

canella · 16/12/2009 11:14

Awassailing - is it me you're calling "silly" - the OP asked whats for xmas dinner as she was fed up of turkey - thats why i compared goose to turkey!

i'm sure some people on MN would pick a fight in an empty house!

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 16/12/2009 11:16
  • sorry I didn't even think about what I'd posted ,

had been up since 5(ish) and had only had one coffee at that time, also failed to notice that the OP had mentioned turkey in her title

canella · 16/12/2009 14:16

's accepted!
drink more coffee!

We've just been out and bought a great piece of silverside, Butcher gave us lots of fat fro cookinga s well, so the roasties will be nice.

Weweregoing to have the supremes they make- chicken stuffed with calvados pate- but decided togofor this;we had turkey alst year but decided that most of the time we actively aovid turkey in favour of chicken, so why on the biggest meal of the year would we then choose to buy it? nah

Great big ham for boxing day (8 to feed) and a christmas pie, but tbh I'dsay go to a decent butchers (ours has where everything comes from written on a board) and buy what looks really good. Could have been locallamb but today the beef was exactly waht we wanted.

nappyaddict · 20/12/2009 16:27

We went to Aldi and bought for over the xmas period:

Goose (£14.99)
3 bird roast (£9.99)
Duck (£5.99)

We went to Lidl and bought:

Pheasant (£7.99)
Quail
Venison

Sorry can't remember the price for the last 2. Lidl had duck but it was £6.49 and Aldi had pheasant which was £7.99 as welll but not as big.

Last year we got a really nice ham on xmas eve in Asda reduced to a few pounds so hoping we will be able to get one this year as well.

nappyaddict · 20/12/2009 16:28

Next year I want to try partridge and capon.

Fed up With Turkey not Of.

traceybath · 20/12/2009 16:31

We're having turkey because its free after delivery debacle last year.

However we've just had slow roasted shoulder of pork with sage and apple stuffing (£6 from waitrose) and it was delicious - I doubt the turkey will be as nice.

So how about that?

coldtits · 20/12/2009 16:36

Lamb
roasted with generous salt.

bb99 · 20/12/2009 16:41

Beef Wellington and nut roast with all the trimmings, extra wellington AND yorkshire pud

Xmas pud, triffle, lemon roulade or choc pots for pud.

NotaStepfordWife · 20/12/2009 16:42

Rib of beef here - Four between 9 of us

ShinyAndNew · 20/12/2009 16:45

We're having Roast Lamb (which I will roast the night before). A Pork Crackling joint, roasties done in goose fat, roasted carrots and parsnips, mash, yorkshire puddings and those little sausges with the bacon on them oh and sprouts too. With home made Lamb gravy, which I might also make on xmas eve and then reheat.

Then we are hvaing Tesco Finest Xmas pud, with a choice of cream or brandy butter.

Wineonafridaynight · 20/12/2009 17:36

Having turkey this year but had a delicious goose two years ago. Really enjoyed it. It was the first time I had had goose. Last year we went out for Christmas dinner, hence no mention of last year's and so picked out of beef, turkey or ham.
