i pretended that i no longer believed in the red suited one a long time before i actually stopped. in fact i believed a good year or two after db's (both younger than me) had stopped.

then i saw my mum filling my stocking one Christmas eve when i was 13 and i really knew that A) i had been vvv bad and mum was trying to spare my feeling (not a real possibility!) or B) he wasnt real and had been made up so that i would behave myself.

sob.

I was left in charge of a gift shop in an indoor market when I was about 8 (its a long story) and a woman customer came in and asked 'Do you sell stocking fillers?'

And I went GULP as I realised it wasn't Santa that bought the stocking presenets but humans.

I was left in charge of the fishmongers stall too....

Yes, magical postman. Although it would be good if the lazy sod could use the other 364 days of the year to do a bit of cash in hand work for Royal Mail. Whip 'em into shape like.

Are you saying that FC is not real?

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Wanderinginawinterwonderland · 13/12/2009 14:55

I was about 8.

For ages I had heard other older horrible brats children say that he wasn't real and that it was your mum and dad. I kept asking my mum if he was real. She kept trying to put me off by saying, "if you don't believe, you don't recieve!" or "you can believe whatever you want to believe, don't listen to anyone else!"

She finally sat me down on Christmas day (thanks mum) and told me the truth.

I was fine about it though and although I thought it was ashame that he didn't exist, I was glad that I had had the chance to believe because the magic was so wonderful.

Wouldn't it be fantastic if he was real though? You wouldn't have the stress of Christmas shopping for one thing!

catinthehat2 · 13/12/2009 14:58

Mollie, I warned Lissie this would happen, but would she listen???

LynetteScavo · 13/12/2009 15:02

I still belive.

So for those of you who don't.

lissielouskissingsantaclaus · 13/12/2009 15:11

Im not saying he's not real, of course he is! but some adults lose their faith as they get older, thats all....

I still have the faith, despite the naysayers!

Wanderinginawinterwonderland · 13/12/2009 15:16

There was supposed to have been one once upon a time. They used to go around riding on a grey horse rewarding 'good' children with sweets and beating the 'bad' children with chimney brooms (or something).

My godmother and godfather (both in their 60s) took their grandchildren to lapland to meet the real one. My godfather (a very stoic yorkshire man) came back with his faith fully restored. He is most definitely real. Uncle Chris has seen him.

I distinctly remember one christmas eve asking where I put my pillow case and my dad saying "aren't you a bit old for all of that?" and thinking "if I tell him I don't believe I won't get anything at all - don't fall for it!" So I think I knew ong before I admitted to anyone that I did!

I love that my nieces in Australia get their presents first. Makes it seem all more do-able if he is 'on his way'!

magicofchristmas · 13/12/2009 18:24

There's still a lot of Santa about.

Where I come from originaly there has been a guy who for the past 30yrs has gone around collecting pressies from well wishers to make sure that no children in the local area wake up on christmas morning without something.

Sadly some bastard lowlife stole his crate/trailer/sleigh (whatever it's called) a few weeks ago.

CirrhosisByTheSea · 13/12/2009 18:39

I think I was probably about 7.

frazzled74 · 13/12/2009 18:43

I still believe.

bran · 13/12/2009 18:49

I stopped believing when I was 3. My mother loves the whole Santa thing so much that I was still getting a stocking until I left home. She insisted that my DB still believed so I had to get one too or he would be upset. He's only 5 years younger than me, so was at least 16 when I left home.

My mother is also a bit that I told DS that it was a story that people like to pretend is true, like the Easter Bunny or the Gruffalo. So last year (when DS was 4.5) Mum insisted that we go to see Santa while we were staying with her. Now DS is pretty sure that Santa does exist, because he's met him. TBH he was a fabulous Santa, I was nearly convinced myself.
