stocking fillers for a 9 month old anyone?

most baby toys I find come in whopping great big boxes, not ideal for a stocking, even if your stocking is the size of a pillow case.......
Shall I just get him boring stuff he needs like the next size up in vests and socks? I feel a bit mean though

What about treasure box type stuff? A pine cone, piece of interesting material etc?

awastingamanger · 08/12/2009 14:36

Right, DS was 9 months last Christmas.

We got him

  • stacking cups (from Ikea, no box, just plastic wrap)
  • rubber ducks for the bath (from Boots, they have them in atm, got some more)
  • slipper socks

It was a small stocking!

DS loves small board books, saw a set of Charlie and Lola books in Boots today that would be a perfect stocking filler.

Plastic plate / bowl for all that lovely food

New bib

Rice cakes

Small ball

Socks (I always put some new socks in DS and DD's stockings)

Small musical instruments, eg bells, they do quite a lot of these in ELC For example

all dd had in her stocking at this age was a rattle and that shredded metallic tissue stuff

awastingamanger · 08/12/2009 15:07

Really I just got him stuff I would have been getting him anyway, eg. bath toys, stacking cups recommended for 9month+ development etc.

MamaGoblin · 08/12/2009 15:30

DS was 9 months this time last year and he barely got tree presents, let alone a stocking!

He thought it was fab having his grandparents around all day (both sets) and they all gave him loads, most of which he wasn't bothered about unwrapping/playing with immediately - it was just too much. DH and I decided to keep it pretty minimal because we knew his grandparents would go mad.

This year, I sort of overcompensated though, and can't stop buying small stocking fillers, so that serves me right for being sanctimonious!

My little man has just turned 10 months and I've (santa has) got him some stacking cups/rings, some little teething rings with animals etc on and have seen some little tiny bath toys in ELC that I'll get him. Oh, and a few little choccies too and am just hoping his teeth will have arrived by then

drinkystinkyuletidegubbins · 08/12/2009 15:42

DS2 is getting a bath toy, a bath mitt, a satsuma and a ball - all in his stocking...

drinkystinkyuletidegubbins · 08/12/2009 15:42

ps at that age they're more interested in the wrapping/gift tags anyway IME...

Bettymum · 08/12/2009 15:47

I'm not a Scrooge, honest, but I do think 9 months old is far too young for you to be worrying about stockings. DD was 11 months last Christmas and I didn't do her a stocking, this year I have made her a felt boot with her initial on and I've got some cheap little things - bracelet, hairclips, gloves etc. If I was you I'd save your pennies this year for some nice sparkly wrapping paper and ribbons .

SydneyB · 08/12/2009 15:50

I am a scrooge. It's official. Wouldn't get a 9 month old anything! They don't know its xmas do they? My 15 month old isn't getting anything apart from wrapping paper and the odd bit of turkey.

awastingamanger · 08/12/2009 15:53

(It's not for them! )

SydneyB · 08/12/2009 15:54

Well, what is the point then?

unfitmummy · 08/12/2009 16:15

i think you need to change your name to scroogeB!! but everyone is right about the children not really caring at this age. my ds who is 17 months will be getting small cars(poundland 10 for £1), slippers, new toy story cup (poundland), glow in the dark stars for his room, a drum (75p from ELC), two videos (bambi and thomas, 50p each from charity shop), and some chocolate coins.

Fruitbatlings · 08/12/2009 16:16

I'm tempted not to do him a stocking but his big bro will be getting one and even though DS2 won't have a clue what's going on, I'd just feel soooooo mean not giving him a stocking
Maybe I should just do DS1 a stocking and let DS2 play with the discarded paper
I think DS1 (4 years old) will wonder why his little brother didn't get anything from Father Christmas so maybe I will just get him some stacking cups as suggested above and teething rings/musical instruments.
Thanks for the advise!

I've always thought Christmas was about giving Sydney, and I love giving presents.
If it's stuff you'd have been buying them anyway, what's the problem?

SydneyB · 08/12/2009 16:20

You are right awastingamanger, I am in a bit of a grump about xmas today! Apols.

awastingamanger · 08/12/2009 16:24

Aww... no worries.

Bettymum · 08/12/2009 16:24

Ah you see, the older sibling thing makes a difference in that case yes I think he needs a stocking with some little bits in so your DS1 doesn't wonder why his little brother has been left out.

mumoverseas · 09/12/2009 04:55

Yes, the little ones definitely need a stocking if there are older brothers and sisters otherwise they will wonder why santa didn't leave the baby anything

WeThreeNinks · 09/12/2009 09:14

Bubbles! Get them for both DC and you can have them all over the place while you take the photographs
