Does one eat the thing?

I have never made one, but may take a foray into the world of baked real-estate this Christmas...

Huh?

Mumsnet has gone weird and red with $$$ signs. I didn't mean to post twice!

Is this something to do with the work being done d'ya think?

I love Ikea- I get gingerbread houses from there every year. Never do the sugar syrup thing- I buy a big tube of white writing icing instead- far less messy and it looks like snow!

Have attempted to post photo. Used royal icing with lots of egg white - renders it fairly inedible in the end. Kids had great fun making it - did require lots of propping up while icing set though (and previous year's attempt was an unmitigated disaster!). I would say fun to make, but more of a decoration than a dessert.

I tried to make one last year, dd dripped molten sugar glue on the back of my hand but the blister scar can barely be seen now (as long as its a 60W eco bulb)

Nope, I'm just greedy! I don't think you're meant to eat them really... I nibbled at mine after Christmas and it was ok. But I'm on record as being a pig...

No recipe needed for royal icing, just buy the packet stuff (Tate and Lyle) and mix nice and thick.
Or you could make it with two egg whites and normal icing sugar, but I think the royal icing in the packet has pasturised egg white.

I will admit to owning this book.

As a child in the US we made them every year in school - we used milk cartons as the base and Graham Crackers for the gingerbread. Very easy! You can probably buy the crackers in food halls here. The houses are small, but get each family member to make one and you have a little village.

I've bought the Ikea one this year though.

Seriously, you can get these for £2.30???

Why did I pay bloody £25 for one from Amazon, for DD and her bff to do on DD's birthday.

Ffs, £25, and it's not even arrived yet.

25 quid. I am stupid.

I too have suffered several burns when using the melted sugar method- hence resorting to writing icing in a squeezy tube. Try it- trust me it's so much easier

Yup- £2.30

It's this one here

Ooh, it's made by the company that make those Swedish ginger thins! I get a bit addicted to them at christmas.

So, is everyone going to post photos of their gingerbread, um, erections? I'm not planning to get mine up until about a week before christmas, mind...

fnar fnar, etc.

This was my effort last year. Definitely wont bother again. The gingerbread was rock hard, we had to leave it out for the birds after Christmas. But that was after DD1 had picked all the sweets off, scoffed them and had a total meltdown.

Good lord toddler, it looks like an Alaskan house after the deepest flurry of the year. But at least the walls are vertical, which I doubt mine will be.

I made the Ikea one with my dds earlier, (they are 4 and 2 so their job was to hand out smarties!) I am stupidly protective of it now!

God, I'm so technically incompetent - had downloaded photos, but failed to set up page (even more incompetent than my gingerbread housebuilding skills!)
