for the first time in about ten years I have been given Christmas Day off and no need to do the turkey and all the trimmings. So I offered to cater for boxing day instead.....

Has to be either something buffet like or that can go in bowls as too many folk and too small a table for everyone to sit formally.

Any thoughts? On past boxing days I have done curry but for some reason no notion for that this year.

Please can I have some lovely mumsnet suggestions!

TIA

This www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/beef-recipes/jools-s-favourite-beef-stew is lovely.

I make it when I've loads to cater for. Lovely with warm crusty bread. Can be served in big soup bowls.

On tip though - I put garlic in both and the start and as Jamie suggests at the end crushed up with lemon zest and rosemary.

A hit with all ages and tastes.

I do boxing day every year and this is the most popular thing I make - unless I make it every year no-one will come!

The best thing is that you can make it in advance and freeze it. I made mine last weekend - take it out of the freezer on Christmas night and leave it out, it'll be perfect by lunchtime on Boxing Day.

I always do a honey roast ham on boxing day morning and we have that cold with all the traditional mash pickles etc.
auntyspan have printed your receipe and gonna give that a go aswell looks delicious.

loflo · 03/12/2009 13:38

auntyspan - that looks lovely - which point do you freeze?

leftover turkey sandwiches, othersandwiches and platefuls of nibbles.
(like sausage rolls, etc)

We goto my aunt and uncles and as there are so many of us now with children and husbands/bf/gf's we all bring party food I usually go to M&S or Waitrose, everyone brings a selection then its cooked throughout the day no stress for everyone and because everyone brings something its cheaper for all and you knwo there is soemthing your going to like!

My uncle used to cook christmas dinner for all on boxing day but its just not practical with so many of us! We tried eating out but its hard sometimes to find somewhere everyone enjoys!

I used to do a fish pie, made before Christmas and frozen. No hassle at all

auntyspan · 07/12/2009 21:57

I've frozen it a couple of ways - the first time I cooked the whole thing and the defrosted it overnight and ate it cold. The second time I made it but didn't brush it with milk, just froze it like that. Then I defrosted it completely (took a while) and then cooked it and served it hot. Both were fine, although I did prefer it cold

Cheers auntyspan! Making it on Sunday - keep fingers crossed! Think I will cook right through then freeze and serve cold. Mucho gracias!
