The presents I had in mind for these children aren't any good as I now have to post them so I'm looking for a board game/s suitable for their age ranges - 2 different families.

Any tried and tested family games?

There's a list here of some interesting games.

pictureka is great!

highly recommended and as much fun for adults as 4 year olds!

MissGreatBritain · 03/12/2009 13:04

Uno Flash is really good, although a bit pricy. We got it last year and have played it loads of times. (DS was 6, DD 12)

mogs0 · 03/12/2009 14:03

Thanks for the suggestions! I've gone for Pictureka (and would quite like one for myself!) - good price in Argos and I have a voucher to use up so even better!!!

junior monopoly is good...and doesn't last as long as the adult version
frustration, uno slam, jenga, kerplunk...

mogs0 · 03/12/2009 14:20

I had a go at Junior monopoly recently and wasn't that keen on it tbh. The car kept coming off the track and it seemed to go on forever! Although, since playing that my ds has discovered the original monopoly and seemed to get the hang of it quite quickly.

Egyptians: sounds a hopeless game but actually it is good fun! we have played it many many times over the years which is always the test. Better for us than Cluedo.

pollywobblebauble · 04/12/2009 13:06

mogs, the one with the track is my first monopoly and i agree, it is a pain....junior monopoly is the next one, it's like proper monopoly but fewer complications like paying rent and buying extra houses

does anyone have pictureka flipper? is it fun or a pain?

pagwatch · 04/12/2009 13:09

I love sorry.
I always forget until I play it how brilliantly vile you can be to each other. Always a winner at christmas.

( I am not allowed to play Monopoly. It doesn't display mummy in her best light and such behaviour is uncalled for frankly)

mogs0 · 04/12/2009 13:45

polly - ah, I see. I didn't realise there was a different one! I'll keep an eye out for that for another time.
I looked at the penguin pictureka on ebay and I decided against it - lots of 'flipping and spinning tiles everywhere' was one description and enough to put me off!

pag - I think I looked at sorry but ended up with too many too choose between!

I bought Pictureka today and it looks like good fun - hoping someone will buy it for ds for Christmas!!

thanks mogs...dd has been checking that santa would know that she wanted the flippa one ....may have to bite the bullet and be prepared to pick a lot of tiles up!

mogs0 · 04/12/2009 20:33

When ds saw them on the table this afternoon he was really excited and said I'd chosen well! He then proceeded to tell me all about the game and the penguin one because he'd seen them advertised on tv. I hadn't fully appreciated how much they take in when watching shite tv (I'm such a naive mother ).

i know, dd was humming a song yesterday, i asked if it was for the school concert but she said it was the coca cola ad!

mogs0 · 04/12/2009 23:52

Ha, ha!! I'm not sure when ds actually watches adverts because it's usually cbbc on the tv - I think he's secretly hooked up to sky and just flicks over to cbbc when I'm within ear-shot!!

Not all board games, but good family games: Rummikub - ok for the 7-11s. There is/was junior version which would be ok for the younger ones. Yahtzee, Mastermind & Triominos also gone down well here.

mogs0 · 05/12/2009 09:15

I love Rummikub! Ds (7yrs) had a go last year but needed some help. FC has got him the junior version for Christmas but I read a couple of reviews on Amazon this week and it's not rated very highly.

Is Yahtzee the one with lots of dice? I think I had that for Chritmas when I was young - Mum's probably still got it!!

I looked at Triominos too, that looks good. I'll keep all of these in mind for future reference!

We like Cadoo by Cranium - our four year old can do it with a bit of help, and adults enjoy it too.

Ingles2 · 05/12/2009 09:26

we love Carcassonne
It's not a board game as such, it's a tile game. You have to build a village using the tiles and get points for castles, farms, roads etc. There are lots of expansions available as well. I have 2 boys 8 and 10 and they love it.
