Mean not to have a tree?

We live in quite a small bungalow and are debating whether to have a tree this year. We have a fairly small livingroom, but could move a table out to the garage and put a tree in the bay window.

DS is going to be 23 months and we didn't have one last year as thought it was too much of a hazard (pulling it down on top of himself etc). We'll be spending Christmas eve and Christmas day at the PIL's house and they will have a tree there.

Am I being mean not to have one at home? Do you think DS will be old enough to appreciate it and for it not to be a hazard. Would be a real one if we were to have one at all.

YES its mean!!!
Get a tree with a good strong base on it, put it on the floor rather than a table(so if it does topple, it doesn't topple from a height) and it will be fine!

I seem to remember mine were just starting to get super excited at this age. I think you all would miss out

Don't think it's mean but it would be a shame. Could you get a growing tree. They are usually v small the first year but big enough to be nice. Also not going to drop needles and will be more stable than a chopped off one in a stand.

Not mean. At 23 months, he will think it's pretty but he is not old enough to anticipate it or appreciate it in any way. Save it for next year when he will know what is going on.

youve gotta have a tree artificial of course much tidier lol

purpleduck · 30/11/2009 10:13

I still love it when you have just put the tree up - tidied everything away, put your jammies on and sit in the living room with only the tree lit up - it still makes me feel enormously content

Purple duck - thats very sweet.

aahhh, yeah mean... You have to have a tree!

My DD is 16mths and will prob be pulling the decs off but it doesnt really matter does it!?
Its all part of the excitment of xmas.
We too will be away for xmas but still having a tree and decs up.

At 23 mnths he will just be begining the understand xmas and enjoy it. Doesnt have to be a big tree. Agree that a potted one would be more stable if your worried. Just make sure the lower branches dont have a breakable decs on them.

Put plastic unbreakable decorations near the bottom and the more delicate ones near the top, and that way it's not such a problem if the tree gets undecorated. My DSs didn't really touch the tree at that age, but my DD liked to take things off and put them back constantly. It was less stressy if we knew she couldn't do any real damage.
