She is 82 years old, bit wobbly on her feet, cant be anything technical as she get flustered at turning the channel over on the TV and has to have instructions written down her to remember.

Im really stuck for ideas. It seems to get harder every year!

Any ideas/inspiration would be great

Small coffee-table type book on history with lots of pictures?

Curiousmama · 29/11/2009 22:15

has she got a bean tray? I'd quite like one Also like those snuggly fleece sleeping bag come dressing gown things although may be hard to walk in one?

Curiousmama · 29/11/2009 22:16

What about one of those tv remotes with huge buttons?

Curiousmama · 29/11/2009 22:17

some there

Electric hot-water thingy (that sits on the kitchen counter and fills a cup of tea up at the touch of a button - it is filled with cold water at the start of the day and means personages of wobbly feet can make hot drinks without spillages).

Notelets and stamps / headed notepaper with her address at the top

Chocolates / biscuits to share with visitors

Book token

Audio stories

Visit from mobile hairdresser

Oat-filled bag that you heat in microwave in lieu of hot water bottle

Photos of kids/family - in frame

Houseplants / flowers in a vase

Edible gifts? Although if she lives on her own make sure you get a selection of small size items with a long use by date. I often buy my Mum (83) a little selection of bits to eat.

Scarf, hat, gloves.

Slippers, slipper socks, bed socks.

DVDs if she hads a player.

Talking books.

Nice photo frame/album. This year my Mum is getting a digital photo frame - but I will load it up so that all she has to do is plug it in.

If all else fails a plant or flowers are usually appreciated.

Good luck - my Mum is always the difficult one to choose for.

audio books

bird feeder especially the kind you stick on a window

indoor garden in a bowl

A nice leather purse from M&S.

Like this perhaps.

Or else I would second the digital photo frame.

If she is looking after herself, would definitely get the bean tray if she hasn't got one. Otherwise, would make up a hamper of nice M%S tinned food stuff so that she always has food in for Jan/Feb when harder to get out to the shops,

She might also appreciated book of stamps & packs of birthday cards/notelets for future use.

Lots of gadgets out there too like can openers etc.depends on her circumstances and what she's already got but things to make life easier for her might be good??

Curiousmama · 29/11/2009 22:42

I've got my mam an art deco figure mirror from past times. She's 80 next year and loves that era for obvious reasons...although she's more up to date than me

em83 · 30/11/2009 08:28

what about a talking photo album ?here

i second the hamper idea, especially from m ns, you can create your own to persons individual tastes, as big or small as you like !
you could add tea/coffee/biscuits/cakes/tinned goods etc

Thanks for all your replies,

Some nice ideas here. I have just come up with an idea that im actually quite proud of!
We are going to get her a magazine subscription. She does read a fair few magazines as she doesnt get out and about very much and also does alot of wordsearches. Going to quiz FIL as to what mags she reads and either get a mag or wordsearch magazine subscription for her.

Topped off with a little hamper of yummy foods

Thanks
