White Xmas Trees - funky or naff?

In B&Q last night, with dcs, bought this Xmas tree, and loads of the jewel coloured baubles and stars.

Very excited DS2 made me put it up (trial only, we don't put our decorations up til just before DD's birthday on the 12th) But, instead of looking funky and fun, it just looked crappy and cheap. This tree is only for our extension, where the kids toys, the wii, computer etc is, we have a very traditional tree and decorations in the front room, but I'm seriously considering bringing it back. Is it hideous???

White trees are naff.

But the picture you linked to looks ok. Possibly because I thought it looked less like a traditional Xmas tree and more like it was made of cotton wool... which I found strangely appealing.

I realise this does not help. Sorry.

Hmm, I think that's the problem - it doesn't look like it does in the picture. There was a massive cardboard cutout in store of the pic that's on the website, and that's the only reason I bought it (only went in to B&Q for lightbulbs!)

But when I put it up, it looks just like a traditional artificial tree, but white.

Thinking maybe I need MORE decorations on it...

Very naff, but fine for a playroom!

As long as you have a real tree with tasteful decorations in the sitting room...

JustAnotherManicMummy · 28/11/2009 15:03

Are you just trying to block out the tree with decorations? That could work. Or it might look like a pyramid shaped pile of decorations...

Take it back. If it doesn't look like the picture and you don't like it and it's not a massive inconvenience to take it back then do.

Keep it if you'll never really look at it much and the kids like it.

We had to have white trees at work once. They looked really cheap and nasty. I went and got a real one for my office - being a bit of a rebel . It was lovely. All piney-smelling. Although a bugger to dispose of.

garciasangria · 28/11/2009 15:25

Haha, I could just block it out with decorations, great idea manicmummy!

No, made up my mind, it's going back. B&Q's only 5 min drive away, will look for something slightly more tasteful to exchange it for - but, I do love the magenta, turquoise and lime baubles, will keep these, but for a green tree I think.

The reason it looks good in the picture is the room it is set in.
It is set in a contemporary 'fun' room - all the tat on the shelves and wall tie in with the trees' decorations etc - as do the presents. It is all done with a similar colour scheme.

My artistic opinion.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 28/11/2009 15:38

Would look flippin' awesome in a minimalistic white apartment!

garciasangria · 28/11/2009 16:11

Well, the kids have just thrown a wobbler over taking the white tree back.

DD read my posts over my shoulder and is now throwing a strop (and bless, said 'but me and DS2 were going to make paper chains to go on it') DS in tears, apparently it's the prettiest tree he's ever seen.

Looks like I'm stuck with it.

I think the only thing I can do is embrace the naffness of it, and blame the kids. Paper chains are probably a good idea in fact.

...dreams of a minimalistic white apartment, whilst tripping over wii remotes and bits of lego....

Ladyoftheflowers, have just read your post re. the decor of the room. I'm realising our extension's actually not dissimilar - one wall red, other 3 a beigy cream, tan corner sofa, wood slat blinds, brown shaggy rug, and red/brown/cream curtains with big flowers, and big glass light fitting that DH calls my disco ball! It's actually quite nice when it's tidy (though it never is)

So, the tree might not look too bad in there...I absolutely refuse to hang the 3 bauble wreaths on the wall though!

Am now looking for paper chain kits that have the right colours (anal...me??)

Will have to post a photo of it in all its tacky fun and funky glory when it's up so you can all have a good snigger!

Oh, and happy happy kids again.

I bought the same tree and decorations but haven't put it up yet! I hope mine looks ok. It didn't occur to me that a white tree could be thought naff

garciasangria · 28/11/2009 19:48

MamaVoo, we're naff tree twins!

Nah, I've actually come round to mine now...half way down my first glass of red and I'm thinking Xmas is for the kids anyway and they love that damned tree.

Been looking at paper chain kits, and they're all multi coloured - does anyone know if or where you buy gummed coloured paper you can cut into strips?

OP posts:
JustAnotherManicMummy · 28/11/2009 20:09

Could you use a prit stick to fix the strips together?

Glad your keeping it

PercyPigPie · 28/11/2009 20:30

Just staple them - the glue always comes undone

I have a white naff tree! I quite like its naffness!

It matches the mismatched baubles and decs I have on it. The girls are now 11 and 8 and have been making tree decs (equally naff) ever since about 2yo!! SO the naff home made decs go on the naff white tree, with the additional naff non christmassy Disney princess, pooh bear, Barbie and Bratz decorations MIL has purchased for the girls over the years!

I admit my tree looks uber naff but kids absolutely love it! We are living in 1970's married quarters with 1970's fittings! LOL, so all in all its quite retro!!

Perhaps if I lived in a nice victorian house or cosy cottage I may be inclined to go with the brown and bronze, red and gold co ordinated look, but tbh, I love letting the kids decorate it and every year they get all excited about the naff decs coming out the box and have memories attatched to alot of them. To me Xmas is about the kids and nostalgia - so I am leaving it as it is for now!!

Perhaps one day I will be there with the tape measure, counting my baubles and be colour co ordinated but not yet!

My nan had a white tree. I still remember it fondly. Your kids will do the same. Good on you for letting them keep it! Multiple trees are the way to go.
