so do I go out and get the lego he now plans to ask FC for or spend the next couple of weeks before we go on the Santa Express to persuade him that he wants the gift I've bought already??? He's 3 so it's the first time he's thought of things to ask for

Depends on your budget I suppose - or could you return the alien thing or put it away for his birthday?

I have no idea what the alien thing is but Lego/Duplo will probably me played with longer...

Either way, you need to sit down with him and write a letter to FC NOW and obv no more changes are allowed after the letter has been posted!

this is why my DS's only give FC Suggestions not requests -especially the younger DS's as they will change their mind . (and it will ALWAYS be something other than the present that they "really" wanted that will capture their imagination

DaftApeth · 26/11/2009 13:07

We always say that they can write things on their lis but it doesn't mean that they will always get them.

''Father Christmas can't buy everything on the list otherwise he wouldn't have enough money left to but presents for other people''

Dd is still looking through a recently acquired argos catalogue saying ''I want that and that and that......''. At least she has moved on from the Harrods catalogue she was glued to (and slept with) for the last couple of weeks.

Ds1 (4) is doing this at the moment. I've bought his presents and I'm not changing anything. I'm guessing that he'll forget and be delighted with the pile of stuff that he sees in front of him on Christmas Day.

And fortunately his birthday is 6 weeks afterwards, so if he still desperately wants whatever-it-is by then, I get a second chance!

In the meantime I keep telling him that he is getting "Surprises" for Christmas.

fishie · 26/11/2009 18:43

hmm i have tried calling ds's bluff on such matters and it never works. why has he gone off it?

deaconblue · 26/11/2009 19:14

He still loves it but he thinks he can only ask Father Christmas for one thing and is currently coveting Indiana Jones lego. Have bought lots of other bits and bobs already but could possibly stretch to one of the little indy lego kits. Think will wait and see what he actually asks for when we go to visit Father Christmas

This is exactly why, now DS1's letter to FC is written, we will not be letting him near a toy shop or commercial television until after Christmas!

I think it's really hard to judge at this age whether it's just a whim or if it's something he's really set his heart on. I must admit if it were me I don't know if I'd be strong enough to risk a wobbly bottom lip on Christmas Day. Of course, theoretically they ought to be grateful for whatever they get but I think with all the hype surrounding Christmas and the fact you are taking him to see FC who will ask him what he wants you kind of have to give them what they really want, within reason. It's just hard when they're so inconsistent.

My DD (almost 3) keeps changing her mind but I've bought her presents already. I'm counting on her not remembering/caring once she starts opening things on the day.

Lilyloo · 26/11/2009 22:16

At this age i think you can 'big up' the gift you have bought.
Tell him how good it is and he could do x and x and x with it compared to his 'new' choice.

My dd1 didn't have anything on her list so i got things i thought she would like. This week she decides it's go go hamsters. Have been tearing my hair out trying to find the no1 xmas toy
