NOT getting DS (5yrs) the main present he has asked for ... anyone in the same boat?

I started to buy christmas presents very early on, I have got DS the kind of toys he wanted mainly Transfformers but in the Sainsburies sale and using the great littlewoods codes, but the one he wants is a big huge 'Devestator' transformer and its alot of money, its £100. (its essentially 6 x £20 transformers that join together to make this huge one)

I just cannot get it him, at the time I didn't know that this was his main want and it was in sainsburies half price, but £50 is still waytoo much.
Hes been having a rough time with starting school and I don't want him to be disapointed.

Last year he just wanted cheap things but I don't think he has any concept of how much more this costs than normal transformers.

If he is anything like my ds (also 5) then by the time christmas day comes he will have forgotten what he has even asked for . I am sure that he will be just as happy with any transformer stuff that you have gotten .

Maybe write a note from Father Christmas saying that he is really sorry but the elves had not made enough but that he hopes he likes this extra large bar of choc instead . Keep it hidden unless he mentions it .

My ds will be bought over with chocolate for pretty much anything .

He'll get over, there will be so many other exciting things to open and play with, and if he gets any money for Christmas maybe it will be reduced enough in the sales (£100 is outrageous). It will only be a disappointment if you allow it to be.

My dds frequently don't get all that they ask for.

When we're writing lists I make it clear that FC can't bring everything, likes to bring surprises and won't bring things he doesn't think are worth the money (!) or that they won't really enjoy.

I don't think there's ever been an issue with my two girls.

madrush · 26/11/2009 11:39

oh yes, and FC doesn't bring things that parents might not approve of, kittens for example!

TheMightyToosh · 26/11/2009 11:42

Have you lead him to believe that he might be getting it? If so, I would try to pre-empt it by making sure he knows he isn't getting.

He might have forgotten about it, but on the other hand, he might be inwardly really excited about getting it, and be really crushed when it isn't there. And that would be a shame if it could be prevented.

I know im being daft really.

I think you definitely have to make it clear to him NOW that he won't be getting it - mine can be reasonably satisfied if I say something like "That's too expensive for Sata to bring".
Mine DO remember what is on their list and are disappointed if it's not there. I remember ds at around 2 checking what he had received with the "list" they had made at nursery by sticking pictures on a sheet of paper. He had stuck a picture of a digger down and Santa didn't bring it. It woudl have been nice for nursery to send the list home with him before Christmas Eve..

My DS is also 5 and wants the exact same thing!

I have already told him, every time he mentions it, that it is too much money and that if I buy it we will have to sell the telly It was the only way I could get even the slightest smidgen of understanding into him.

Hasn't stopped him asking and wanting though and he informed me last night that Father Christmas might get it for him. I told him that FC didn't have the money either and he pityingly replied that FC'c elves make the toys!

I am just preparing to deal with disappointment as I have given plenty of warning that he will NOT be getting it.

Just to add my tuppensworth, DS, now 8, has asked for Transformer toys from about the same age as yours Disenchanted. Most end up by boxing day, stuffed in a corner because he is so frustrated at not being able to transform them himself.

Even now he has toyed with the idea of asking for the Devastator, but changed his mind saying "I'm not going to be able to do it, am I mum and I'll end up getting very cross."

And he occasionally digs out the Optimus Prime, last year's (or maybe year before) 'big one' which he still has difficulty figuring out.

And he's considered a bright 'un!

trice · 26/11/2009 12:20

My ds who is eight only wants a wine bottle full of apple juice for christmas. I don't know where he got the idea from or what he is going to do with it but it is already bought and hiding in the wardrobe.

Your ds is going to be so excited about christmas that he won't even remember what he asked for. And you can just blame silly old father christmas for getting the wrong thing

nickschick · 26/11/2009 12:26

Things have changed havent they?

Our xmas lists involved detailed lists of what wed like but knew wed never get ....

I got a dolls pram the year i started secondary not cos id asked for it cos my mum had finally finished paying for it through the xmas club .

Its Christmas not rothschild day - he will be so excited by what he has that he wont remember the tranformer rip off - leaving you to partake of a huge bar of choccy when hes in bed .

And you will pick the transformer up in August for a £10 at the car boot when some mothers selling it cos its never played with.
