Those of you without chimneys, how does Father Christmas get into the house?

We don't have one and I need to come up with some ridiculous story asap to tell ds1 who has started to ask difficult questions.

Lol, our chimney had also been stuffed for many, many years before we moved in. Hadn't thought of what horrors might lie up there - maybe its best left alone!

Lizzylou · 25/11/2009 18:04

WE've said Magic Key this year, as we have replaced our firplace with a hole in the wall jobby (and stuffed loads of DH's socks up the flue bit, please shout if you ever read that I am about to put the fire on ).
Where'd you get your engraved one Titsalina? That sounds lovely.

MrsSid · 26/11/2009 16:52

This magic key thing is all new to me....
How did that happen ? - ds is 7 and dd is 4.
I would have thought I'd come across that by now. I'm obviously just not "with it".
When I was little, I was always told that he came through the letterbox, since we didn't have a chmney.
Current house does have a chimney (gas flame fire with imitation coal) so I guess we're safe enough to stick to the "Santa comes down the chimney" story.

karen3w · 26/11/2009 16:53

When my daughter was young, the question never came up, we just went along the line of him coming down the chimney, although we don't have one. Now my dd is 8 and asks lots of questions, and knows we don't have a chimney, so we left a special key out last year and aftr he'd been there were "snowy" footprints. NOt sure what we're doing this year, I'll watch this thread with interes.

IvanaDK · 26/11/2009 16:56

We have a window at the top of the stairs that is Father Christmas' alternative chimney. We put goodies for him there and leave it slightly open.

Dee39 · 26/11/2009 17:02

Yup, magic key for us too. Not sure we'll need to mention that this year tho', DS 10 and a half and I suspect has only gone along with the 'Father Christmas' idea for the last couple of years as he doesn't want to burst the bubble and upset me!!! I asked him what he would like from Santa this year and got a pitying/quizzical/withering look...

simpson · 26/11/2009 19:09

yes we have a magic key too

Bought it off e bay last year for 99p

DS (4) is not happy about a strange person letting himself into house and going upstairs so his rule is that stockings are kept downstairs

simpson · 26/11/2009 19:09

fogot to say part of our ritual for Christmas Eve is leaving the key out for santa

MM1994 · 26/11/2009 19:11

I am a childminder and when Father Christmas comes to visit the children at my house the week before Christmas he parks his sleigh on the roof and magics himself through the roof to upstairs and then comes down the stairs. We can hear the sleigh bells and footsteps so we know he is coming! He goes out the same way and the kids all rush outside to see if they can see the sleigh flying away but they are never quite in time! LOL. It is a very magical afternoon, even for the non-believers.

Yummybrummymummy · 26/11/2009 19:14

So far we have got away with saying that Santa magic is so special that we don't know how it works. Somehow he manages to get in the house. Last year, the kids were having their Christmas Eve bath (can't be smelly or Santa won't come) and as the bathroom window was already open I snuck downstairs leaving DB in charge. I then stood outside and shook some sleigh bells. The kids nearly exploded with excitement! Never seen them get ready for bed so fast!

Leslaki · 26/11/2009 19:38

We have a magic key that we hang on the Xmas tree by the front door. I always have to remeber to hangit on a different branch after they've gone to bed as DS noticed it looked like it hadn't been moved on year ! It's part of our Xnas Eve traditions like reindeer food, polishing red apples (great idea my dad had one Xmas eve when we were reaching hysteria levels!)and putting on new Xmas PJs! We also watch a special Xmas film....

teameric · 26/11/2009 19:48

tis magic of course

olivo · 26/11/2009 20:28

do you leave the 'snowy footprints' even if it hasn't been snowing?

DD1 is scared of FC so we have agreed to leave stopckings under the letterbox on the inside of the door so he can post the presents through

stuckupacreek · 26/11/2009 20:28

magic key, obv

neversaydie · 27/11/2009 09:13

Father Christmas knocks on the door and asks to be let in.

This dates from DS's monster-fearing phase, when the standard response to hysteria was 'You know Daddy doesn't let strange people into the house, so why do you think he would let monsters in?

He is now 10, and humouring me by not asking too many questions....

tegan · 27/11/2009 09:22

We have a special key that we put on the door handle when the dc's go to bed and he lets himself in and then relocks the door when he leaves, sadly last year the left muddy footprints and the reindeer pooed on the floor so this year dd2 (5) is making a polite note for him to wipe his feet

DoingTheBestICan · 27/11/2009 09:30

We have a magic key,we leave it on a branch outside the front door & dh leaves snowy glittery footprints on the doorstep with his work boots.

mummymeister · 27/11/2009 15:44

Before we moved to a house with a chimney we used to sprinkle magic reindeer food outside (corn, oats and glitter) so he knew that our house did not have a chimney! FC then used his own fairy dust to come in through the windows without opening them with the presents. He also flys round the world anti clockwise and this is how he manages to deliver all of the presents in one night. Have a look at the NASA website which has a santa cam and shows him setting off using "real" pictures on Christmas eve and flying round the world to be at each country at midnight. Who said scientists arent fun!

Washersaurus · 27/11/2009 16:10

We have a chimney, but were always told that FC had a magic key for all doors and windows when we were little.

tootiredtothink · 27/11/2009 17:14

Santa 'magics' a chimney - has no one seen The Santa Clause movie?

Manximum · 27/11/2009 20:54

our santa pops out of the aga (I suppose any oven with a flue would do!) and he leaves muddy footprints on the kitchen floor.

frasersmummy · 27/11/2009 21:05

here's the link to track santa.. it will be updated for 2010

Tegan .. how did you do reindeer poo??

tegan · 27/11/2009 21:30

Dh used choc covered raisons, and even trod on a couple so they squdged abit.

we follow santa on norad every year, the kids love it and it encourages them to get to bed because they know he is coming soon
