Dd1 likes books, writing and her DS. She has loads of games , we are getting over run with books and there is a limit to how many pens and papers we can have.

I have bought her craft sets which sit on the shelves for months and we have quite a few board games.

Absolutely no idea what to get her!and she also has a birthday in December!

How about a subscription to First News, the children's newspaper?

DaftApeth · 21/11/2009 10:52

I was going to suggest e-books or audiobooks, with an ipod and speakers to listen to them.

Library card?!

roisin · 21/11/2009 13:53

Oh, yes that's a great idea Bexibooboo. A subscription to First News would be an ideal present. My boys love it.

We've been getting it since the very first issue. (3.5 yrs?) And they still look out for it and read it every week. Yesterday it didn't arrive, and ds1 (12) was asking where it was and what had happened. (It came this morning).

Your girls would love it N.

I have bought it when I've seen it in the shops. A subscription might be an idea. Though I know dd2 would probably pinch it! She is quite into'The News' (she talks in capitals.

lucy mangan does a fantastic column in the family section of the guardian, on building a book collection for a child, reveiwing one childrens book/series each week. brings back lots of memories of books i had forgotten existed and makes from very intriguing points about particular books and their value.

back columns can be read online

nymphadora · 22/11/2009 20:12

Been following that , we have had nearly all of them

My ten year old has just discovered Agatha Christie have you got those yet ?

nymphadora · 22/11/2009 21:44

That's another of my obsessions I'm only 5 short of the whole lot

Think the problem is we have so many books ,especially now as we are starting to share. We are finding it difficult to make them special. Weobit signed books whenever possible so even they have lost some of their uniqueness

Did you go to the bath lit fetival this year it was amazing !

We have a similar house. Has your dd read inkheart. There is a chapter in there called "A House Full of Books" my dd said "look its just like our house mum".

I don't think you should worry about having too many books at all. Booklovers always love to have new books. I spend hours looking at listmanian to get new ideas and so does dd.

We went to a second hand book the other day and dd said mum "smell that" I thought she said I love the smell of old books don't you.

You can never have too many.

other suggestions my dd read last week :

Dolphin Crossing
Moondial
The Ghosts (which was made into the movie The amazing Mr blundel)
The squampkin patch (amazing writing style)
Chocky

Did i hit on one you don't have ?

nymphadora · 23/11/2009 21:05

I have Inkheart! I am just out of book space , we are still rebuilding our house and the main book place isnt done yet.

We have about 6 storage boxes still to unpack and a few random shelves throughout the house'temporary storage! My to read pile is under my bed and is about 60 books (wont take me long) and I walk past the charity shop every day!

Didnt go to Bath , looked at it but its too far in term time. We are planning Hay again next year , missed last year but just did a book shop there in the summer!

Apparently last Saturday's Lucy Mangan Book Corner column is the last in the series. I want more!

newpup · 24/11/2009 12:18

My bookworm DD also 10 loves her ipod. We put story cds onto it and she listens to it in bed on an ipod dock.

Harry Potter cds - Stephen Fry - fantastic.
Fairy Lights to put around the head of her bed.
Cds

DD's last few favourite reads -

Stig of the Dump
Mallory Towers Set
Nancy Drew
Spy Dog series
Goodnight Mister Tom

May sound a bit naff, but when I was her age I made one of those hook rug things. maybe she'd enjoy doing something like that? Or a cross stitch or tapestry - you can get some quite contemporary ones now, don't have to have a vase of roses with a ribbon tied around it sitting on a wondowsill.

Anyone remember Sweet Sixteen romances and Sweet Valley High? We were reading those at that age too. My class at school must've had the entire collection between us! Yuck.

RJRabbit · 24/11/2009 13:03

Oh, and did anyone suggest one of the mysteries for DS Lite that you have to solve?

nymphadora · 24/11/2009 13:14

She has asked for a cross stitch set now so thats something else.

newpup and Rabbit I've just started her off on Nancy Drew and sweet Valley twins! Did you also read the babysitters club?

OP posts:
newpup · 24/11/2009 17:22

Don't remember either of those, I am afraid.

Only Nancy Drew.

Cross stitch is a nice idea. DD had a french knitting kit last year she loved it!

Another hit was a scrapbooking kit. We gave her digital camera a couple of years ago and she loves it. Pretty photo albums always go down well.

RJRabbit · 24/11/2009 17:50

I think the Babysitters Club came just after my time (poor little old lady, me)

I love scrapbooking! That's an awesome idea, but beware of it taking off as it can get incredibly expensive. But amazing results - have a look at ukscrappers (they have an area for younger members too)
