Ours does, thankfully. Am always surprised at the amount of threads about this every year.

MalibooStacey · 16/11/2009 19:46

its an utter waste of resources

Ours supplies most of them, although apparently parents may be asked for add-on twiddly bits. But DS is a narrator so we should be safe...

flossie64 · 16/11/2009 19:48

Ours does as well , although most have seen better days and the mums often help making headresses for all a few of the infants.

cherrymonster · 16/11/2009 21:18

ours is pretty good, although we may be asked to supply a few bits. last year ds1 needed a tea towel and some rope/braid to tie it to his head, rest of the costume (inn keeper) was supplied by the school

HuwEdwards · 16/11/2009 21:20

might be asked to provide black trousers, but only the kind of stuff you might generally have.

CMOTdibbler · 16/11/2009 21:23

As a child, my teacher mother specifically made me dressing gowns that would work well for shepherds after . 32 years later, they are apparently still in use !

Lonicera · 16/11/2009 21:25

Ours provides the main costume and parents might need to provide t shirts or tights or similar

I have 2 DDs at school, in Year 6 and Year 1 and have never had to make a nativity costume - hurray!

Last year DD2 was a sheep and wore a rather fetching woolly gilet type affair, with a matching woolly headpiece. Good job too, if they'd asked me to provide a sheep costume I'd probably have sent her wrapped in a rug...

ShinyAndNew · 16/11/2009 21:31

We have to buy them. Fortunately dd1 is a lamb again this year, so she can wear last yaers costume.

However the for the school disco, which is a couple of days before her birthady, all of her friends are getting new outfits and shoes.

Feenie · 16/11/2009 21:37

We provide them - have a couple of great TAs who are ace with a needle!

TheCrackFox · 16/11/2009 21:37

Our school provides the outfits too. I think the PTA paid for them.

RustyBear · 16/11/2009 21:40

I work in a junior school & we have a massive cupboard stuffed full of costumes acquired over the years - every year around this time it all comes out & the TAs all get together to work out what will be used for which year-groups play. There's nearly always something new needed, but we have some very ingenious TAs when it comes to adapting stuff, and we usually tend to know which parents will be happy if asked to provide something & which will need help. Sometimes parents will offer to make more elaborate costumes - the school is still using the spider costume I made for DS in Year 3, and he's just left university, and DD's Tudor dress I cobbled together from a couple of charity shop buys when she was Anne Boleyn has reappeared several times too!

Thing is, though, lots of schools simply don't have the space needed to store costumes for a whole year when they'll only be used once or twice - so sometimes asking parents is the only way. I don't think there's really any need for them to require expensive bought costumes though. Generally we'd only ask parents to provide basics - eg for a robin, a brown T-shirt & tights/trousers & we'd do the rest - we have a good line in masks/hats that can be adapted to create birds beaks or mouse's ears, and facepaint does the rest.

I need to send DD1 in a pair of green tights and a white t shirt as the nursery will be christmas roses

The boys mothers are not impressed. At least I can use green tights again!
