We are going to be in a hotel for Christmas... any suggestions how to make it special for DD (4)?

Have posted about this before but now it's a reality I was hoping for some advice...

We are going up to mum n' dad's for Christmas as he's been v. ill and at 79, it may be the last family Christmas we get.

However, he has galloping Alzheimers (part of the reason why he's so ill, he 'forgets' to eat and gets violent when mum/community nurses try to persuade him otherwise) so we're not staying at their house as we would otherwise do, as he has got rather aggressive and shouty and has no patience with DD. We feel it's not fair on her to make her stay there when she won't be able to run about or play.

So, as a compromise, we are staying in a hotel. It was supposed to be a holiday cottage type place but there are precious few of these on the Wirral and by the time my stupid work had finally agreed to give me Xmas week off, they'd all got booked! So we're in the Novotel in Liverpool, we figured that if we had to be in a hotel, at least if we were in one with a pool there'd be something for DD to do!

However... although we are going over to Mum and Dad's on Christmas day, DD will be waking up in a hotel room on Christmas morning. I would like to make it as festive as I can for her, she still believes in the guy with the beard, so we will be taking her stocking up with us and bringing it out overnight, but if we were at home there'd be the glittery reindeer food, talc footprints in the fireplace, carols on the stereo, etc etc...

So, has anyone got any tips for making things a bit lovely for Christmas morning? We are forgoing the hotel breakfast (£13 !!!) and buying choc croissants and champagne to have in the room(our own adult tradition!) so will have that sorted, and am thinking of buying this to take with us, but is there anything else we can do?

Get her to write/draw a letter to father christmas before you go telling him where you're staying etc....

Then have aletter from santa "magically" appear - maybe witha little chocolate treat or something - on the 1st day you'rea t the hotel so she knows he knows where she is.

Xmas PJ's???

DVD/on demand telly christams films??

Take a few bits of cheap tinsel with you to decorate the room with.

Do you have an Ipod/MP3 or music phone? Can you download some carols to play on there in the morning.

A tree is sweet. You could get one of those pop up trees.

Have you checked if the hotel have anythig special happenning on christmas morning? I used to work in hotels and christmas day was always a very special ocassion when we had little guests in house.

I reckon you need tinsel, a tree, a stocking, chocs on her pillow, new tothbrush in the bathroom and definatley some christmas music.

Your brekkie sounds lush, take plastic champagne glasses or they will charge you for corkage if you ask for real ones! But still have a wander down to the lobby as i bet everyone will fuss ovr dd.

It may not be what you are used to, but it can still be magical.

Sorry about your Dad. Give him an extra tight hug this year.

I lost mine this April.

There will be lots on in Liverpool-panto/christmas theatre carol concerts-could you make the most of being central and do some fun stuff?
Christmas Eve carols at the Cathedral
The Snow Queen looks good
also public penguins

Also take a nice scented candle blankies cuddlies fave books or DVDs. She will love it.

Do you know the brilliant Eloise books by Kay Thompson? About a little girl who lives at the Plaza Hotel in New York - there is a Christmas one here - I loved these books when I was a little girl and whenever we stayed in a hotel I used to pretend to be Eloise! Maybe if you got her a copy in the run up to Christmas it could get her all excited about staying in a big hotel!

Also, I loved katylou's idea about a letter from Father Christmas saying he knows where to find her - what about ringing reception before you go and asking them to have a message from him waiting at the desk for her when you check in?

And order hot chocolate on room service to have with a movie on Christmas Eve!

Hope you have a lovely time. If she's anything like my own 4yo DD she will find it all terribly glamorous and exciting!

Oh, thank you all so much, that's fantastic!

We will definitely be ringing the hotel beforehand - if they'll let us we can drop in a note from Santa ahead of time - DH is in Liverpool on business the week before (typical timing!).

The Snow Queen parade on Christmas Eve looks great and we went Superlambanana hunting last year, so she'll love checking out the penguins!

Will definitely look up that Eloise book

Thanks for all the tips and very sorry to hear about your Dad, DrN.
