he loves trains especially thomas.I like the whole take along thomas idea and it cant be packed away although there seems like too many sets to choose from so i cant decide. DS likes the wooden play table in ELC and pushing the trains along although we have not got enough room for the play table itself. However he wooden set in ELC seems very £££££. Really cant decide and advice???

WE've got a right mixture of bits of wooden track, bridges etc masses of engines very few of which are actually Brio, some metal, some wooden they all fit together pretty well. We have one engine which is too small, but other than that they all mix and match, have picked up a few from Ebay, a few from odd places like garden centre shops as well as our original second hand lot from a small ad.

plastic take along thomas we have had it almost 2 years and still played with every day

I love the wooden ones. They last for years - my DS's are all passed on from his 9 year old cousin who started his collection about 7 years ago and played with them to death. They are pristine (apart from Percy who spent the winter in the garden ). Whereas the few metal ones I've bought him are already looking a bit chipped and the paint is fading off their faces. The wooden ones are expensive but you can ask for specific trains on birthdays which is quite handy.

ooh snice - that sounds good. I didn't notice that last year. Could be my DS's xmas present sorted! Will you be posting in the xmas topic so I can make sure I'm on the ball?

thanks for the link to the tesco one - was going to get the one in Boots at £20 but the tesco one looks nicer for only £10!

lisad123wantsherquoteinDM · 19/10/2009 12:31

and you could buy 2 sets LOL
We have a box load here for our girls (2years and 6years) a mix of tesco and brio, they love it

fillybuster · 19/10/2009 12:36

the wooden one from tesco fits with the wooden thomas stuff, so our ds now has a combination of 'real' thomas trains (starter pack from elc) with the £9.99 pack from tesco which also means we have enough carriages for friends to share when they come to play!

Wooden. YOu can buy wooden Thomas trains.

I am not a plastic snob, but train sets need to be tough. They get thrown, trodden on, and generally abused. Plastic just doesn't cut it (we had both at one point, the plastic ended up in the bin after 1 year)

We have wooden and plastic and plastic NEVER gets used! He got them both for christmas last year and whilst the plastic is an ELC motorised set, he much prefers setting up the wooden train tracks (as does dad who always takes pics of the most impressive track made on our floor!) and loves pushing both matchbox cars and brio trains around. We have a mixture of Brio track (gifts from relatives) and Tesco track (bought by us) that all mix perfectly together. If you are saving money go for Tesco - just the same but so much cheaper!

wooden every time. ds played with his wooden train set every day up until his 4th birthday. still plays with it now.
