Would you agree/disagree with one of those advent calendars with pockets that you could put tree decorations or tree chocolates in and every day you have to hang one on the tree?

Ours is blue cotton, with some stuffing stuff in it and red and gold pockets and some stars and ribbons here and there.

ramonaquimby · 25/09/2009 14:28

I don't like the choc advent calendars either, didn't grow up with them so don't hold any meaning for me

we've had a playmobil and lego ones before which were really nice - we have so much of both I can't really justify getting more this year (but they are lovely......) in anticipation I bought a lovely hessian one with pockets for the days and planning on putting little bits in each day for the girls, or things to do. hoping they won't squabble cause I really don't want to buy 2 more!

discTOdisc · 27/09/2009 09:24

I hate the chocolate ones as well. But then I don't want any food to become a 'treat' which is probably why

cherrymonster · 27/09/2009 12:57

i still have a chocolate advent calendar every year, and i will be 29 next year. i do however insist on no crappy kinnerton ones, we have cadbury or galaxy ones here, i buy them for my dc's and my mum buys them for me and my brother.

Buda · 27/09/2009 13:08

I buy DS a chocolate one every year and every year I end up throwing it away with most of the chocolate uneaten so I may not bother this year. But I probably will!

We have a Playmobil one and had a Lego city one one year which I didn't like.

Orchard Cards have beautiful perpetual advent calendars made of cloth which tell the Christmas story. Find them one line.

Littlepurpleprincess · 10/10/2009 11:12

I've bought a little kit to make an advent calender this year for DS, its got a tiny stocking for each day to put a gift in and will look nice as a decoration over the fireplace instead of some ugly cardboard box with disney characters and cheap chocolate.

DS will be getting a marble run from father christmas so I might put a marble in each stocking.

I have 3 DCs - chocolate advent calenders means they get one each, it looks crap, they get torn and it ends up being annoying. I try and find paper ones (card shops usually do one or two, albeit behind the counter most of the time!) and just have a tub of Malteasers handy. They get a chocolate fix, I get an Advent calender that actually looks Christmassy, and everyone's happy!

One year I'm hoping to actually get the cash together for one of the wooden ones

Allets · 10/10/2009 11:40

Christmas is tacky, cheesy and really just one big fat LIE.

BUT.

It's also wonderful, heart warming and joyous for the children.

I can't understand how anybody could hate an advent calendar - I do respect the OP's view though.

My children adore their advent calendar (a wooden Father Christmas with tiny drawers). We put all different things in the drawers and the excitement on their faces every morning is wonderful. Christmas just wouldn't be the same without it.

neversaydie · 10/10/2009 11:56

I still remember the magic of a paper advent calendar when I was a child. It came out every year, and I thought it was utterly beautiful.

I tried to replicate that magic for ds.

However, I have to admit that we made his year last year by permitting his first ever chocolate advent calendar. Ah well.

hippipotamiHasLost69lbs · 10/10/2009 12:04

We have a lovely wooden one which we bought 5 years ago. It comes out every year (obviously) and I hope it will become one of those things the dc remember about our christmas (probably as in 'do you remember that naff wooden calender mum and dad put up each year' )
It features a Christmas living room scene complete with tree and has 25 drawers underneath each with a mini tree ornament for said small wooden tree. I also stuff 2 sweets from a celebrations box in each drawer. The dc take it in turns to open a drawer and have decided amongst themselves that one opens the drawer the other gets to hang the decoration. And each get a celebration chocolate which is much better than those fake Kinnerton chocolates in cardboard calenders.

pipWereRabbit · 10/10/2009 12:08

When I was little I used to get a plain cardboard advent calendar, but the pictures were really lovely. They used to have a scene on the front, perhaps a street scene or the elves workshop, and the windows would open to give you a peek behind the scene e.g. opening a window might show your the child going to bed/hanging up their stocking.

The pictures on the modern caledars seem to bear no relation to the scene on the front. Every year I look for an old-fashioned one but have failed so far.

Can anyone point me in the direction of an old-fashioned calendar please??

smugmumofboys · 10/10/2009 12:19

Phoenix Cards do lovely ones with little figures that you slot into a cardboard background to make up a scene. One is a trad nativity and the other is a school nativity play.

They are both lovely.

vitality · 05/11/2009 12:07

Lots of lift-the-flap, non-toy, non-chocolate ones here and here!

oldraver · 05/11/2009 15:12

I always had a nice cardboard flap one as a kid and have always bought one since, sometimes having to look hard as chocolate one took over. I second Phoenix and had this one last year. Its strong enough to be re-used.

For DS he had a Playmobil one last year and even though the bits drove me round the twist as they got knocked over I've bought another one (just finding it a different home). DS also has a cloth one that I put dairy free chocolate balls and Thorntons dark chocolate coins in

HappyHome · 05/11/2009 16:21

I'm thinking of getting this reusable advent calendar and putting those chocolate santas/snowmen in.

HappyHome · 05/11/2009 16:23

DS has just told me he wants a Star Wars one Very christmassy!!!

Lionstar · 05/11/2009 16:33

If you're looking for a wooden advent calendar that is a nativity then this one is cute, but at the price.

This one and this one are nice as reuseable advents

oldraver · 05/11/2009 18:28

Looking through the links reminded me I have also bought (for myself) night before christmas

This board is a bad influence

TsarChasm · 05/11/2009 18:46

I like advent calendars with chocolates in them.

Not the naff cardboard ones with say Bart Simpson and a bit of molded choccy in (dull), but lovely Christmassy ones with pockets or drawers that you fill are nice.

Calendars with sweets weren't around when I was small so they seem a new thing to me.

I think some people just like to say they're awful because a, they never had them, b, they involve a choccy, c, it's the done thing to say they're awful like apparantly party bags are supposedly terrible things.

Yeah yeah...whatever.

WhatDidISayRoy · 05/11/2009 19:08

we love them! Tis the real start to christmas opening the advent calender with waxy bloomed choc inside.

nappyaddict · 15/11/2009 21:24

Found a nice wooden one in Toys R Us today. It's this one but only £14.99
