How long do you continue to eat your Turkey for if you cooked it Xmas morning?

I believe it is 2 days (don't quote me on that) but I remember it somewhere.

DP is having leftovers tonight and this is the last day I would allow him to eat it.

Myrrhcy · 27/12/2008 17:35

I was right

Not been a food microbiologist for over 4 years now glad theres some things I remember and haven't been frazzled by baby brain

Bugger it hasn't been in the fridge! Although my kitchen is like a fridge as i have had all the windows open to keep food fresh as my fridge was full up. Think tonight will be last night then in the bin - shme though as it still has loads of meat left on it.

The packet mine came in (Sainsburys Free Range) said to eat all leftovers in 3 days or freeze them.

Still think we take too much notice of rules and regs. Surely it is blatantly obvious when the turkey/ham/cream - whatever is off as it smells funny. . don't throw the turkey away! Strip off the meat, freeze it and chuck the carcas in a pan with a few pepper corns etc to make stock. Fish pie for us tonight - in fridge since Christmas Eve - still fine. Have a load of turkey and ham. Have got 3 litres each of turkey and ham stock to freeze. Prob have cold cuts tomorrow with baket potatoes/coleslaw etc and want to try Nigella recipe for chestnut soup.

will be having mine for lunch tomorrow then freezing what is left by tomorrow night

MatNanPlusTINSEL · 27/12/2008 19:25

we will eat for another day or two and then freeze/make up pies etc & freeze.

"Think tonight will be last night then in the bin - shme though as it still has loads of meat left on it. "

This is a CRIMINAL waste of food, FGS. Ok now you strip off all the meat from the carcass (bones). Either freeze it straight away, or make into curry/stew/creamy sauce for pie, and either eat it or freeze it. The re-cooking will destroy any bacteria on it at that stage.

Put the carcass in a large pan of water and boil for a couple of hours to make stock which you can use for gravy, a base for soup, rissotto etc etc etc.

I can't stand the idea of throwing away half the bird simply cos you can't be bothered to deal with it properly.

reindeersnake · 27/12/2008 23:15

Totally agree with Clumsy about criminality of wasting food, on so many levels; sustainability, cost, fact so many people in the world couldn't ever afford it, fact that it was a living animal ... and just because that's the way I was brought up.

As she says - freeze it or cook it and then freeze it or eat it. Soup, curry, pasta sauce, ragout, pancake filling, pasties, pie filling, lasagna ....

have just got all the rest of the meat off of my turkey and frozen it for later

really should be making stock i know, but my freezer is so full i dont have any room for it if i make it
