Wow you are one lucky lady

PavlovtheRedNosedReindeer · 27/12/2008 00:15

Thank you.

Its most improper to gloat and twirl in happiness on MN, but I can't help it. Not able to talk to UK folk due to time zones etc so can't just phone people and tell them! Therefore, MN is my soapbox!

We are going on Sunday, am very very excited. Been to see two so far - Saltimbanco and Alegria, this one is Wintuk...will be fab!

I heart my DDDH!

We had said no presents, certainly no big presents as we dont want to bring loads back from US and DD will have stuff....this is not big in the physical sense, but would have to be a BIG actual present to match it!!!

Lucky you - especially as it was a surprise. Hope you enjoy the show.

You must be a big Cirque fan. I have never been but seen clips on TV. What do you like about it so much?

PavlovtheRedNosedReindeer · 27/12/2008 02:06

Light - We went as a sort of random event for a friend's birthday present a few years ago - we saw it on tv and thought it looked good, so went, and it was AMAZING. The we took my mother as she loves this kind of thing, and we went to Royal Albert Hall. It sort of went from there really, we said it would be good to go see them all over the years, a sort of goal to aim for, but I have not thought about it for a while, did not realise they were here (god knows why, pretty obvious they would be eh?).

What do I love about it? It is bright, colourful, the talent of the acrobats, the choreography of the work is just astounding, the way the show is put together, the fact it tells a story, it is never boring, it is fun, interesting, glamorous, loud, glittery, modern, (does not involve animals of any kind), it captures my imagination like I could only ever recall as a child, that awe and jaw-dropping wonder at something so magical.

enough? I am not poetic, I am not good at describing things, its just something that took my breath away both times. It is now a tradition!

You described it beautifully - I was just curious. Its that imagination/childhood thing - so lovely when you find something which allows you to be transported out of yourself for a copule of hours.

Naff as it is, I had the same with 'Riverdance'.

Well I went to see it, and to be honest, I was disappointed. For the following reasons:

The venue -

  1. MSG was wrong. The ceiling was not high enough for high level trapezes etc, and there was 4,500 people there.
  2. They let people in late, 25 mins after the show started there were people trying to find seats in front of us, behind us, people arguing about someone sitting their seats!
  3. People talked all the way through it, had their phones on, one person actually took a call on his! People took flash photography when asked not to (although think these were those who were late).
  4. Not allowed out at interval - no re-entry. Which meant that by this time DH was annoyed and needed a cigerette, could not go out for one!!!

The show:

  1. It was NOT cirque du soleil. It was a watered down version of it - there were no elaborate costumes, no bright and wonderful and imaginative creations.
  2. It was family oriented. Nothing wrong with that per se, but we had already seen cirque du soleil and thought it a very grown up show, aimed at adults or older children (say 10+). Lots of people brought children 1-2 years old. Again nothing wrong with that if we wanted a family show
  3. It was a modern take on cirque du soleil's normal stuff. Modern clothes, modern music, american accents, bike stunts that kind of thing.
  4. The dancing in it was very 'showbiz'
  5. It was more of a musical with some acrobatic elements that a circus arena/acrobatics with a musical element. It was the wrong way around.
  6. It did not Wow me. It did not make me feel on the edge of me seat, did not make the hairs on my neck stand up, did not make me wish I had joined the circus when I was younger like the others. I have seen two so far before this, both amazing, both very different.
  7. Yes there were jugglers, but lots of people can juggle, yes there was trapeze, lots of people can trapeze.

Good points?
A rag doll who was a great contortionist, fab large snow monsters at the end controlled by puppetters.
Thats it.

Shame, but thumbs down for Wintuk.

Oh no! You must have been so disappointed. Did you own up to DH?

callmeovercautious · 29/12/2008 23:25

Oh - sorry Pav, that's America for you

Good excuse to go again when back home though!
