I gave a fiver in a xmas card.He is a fab postie felt a bit mean only giving a fiver but only had a 20 and he's not that fab

Earlybird · 24/12/2008 02:44

I've had a festive notice attached to my rubbish bin from the bin collector. Guess that means he is hoping for a tip/gift........? Does anyone else give, and if so, what is an appropriate amount?

SuperBunny · 24/12/2008 02:52

Crap! I did nothing. Nor for my building manager - should I have given him something? He hinted at $100 bottles of scotch last year

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 24/12/2008 03:07

My xmas gift to my postman will be all the redelivering of wrongly posted mail that I get! Honestly why employ a postie who is as blind as bat?

I didn't realise people did tip anyone other than the paper boy/girl?

sasamax · 24/12/2008 03:26

I tipped the bin-cleaners and the milk boy but not the postie - is that bad?

Tortington · 24/12/2008 03:53

nope.

i was thinking about it - but then a new one turned up - and i dont think hes earned it

i think the other one earned it

so this ones not getting any.

hockeypuck · 24/12/2008 04:10

I have an awesome postie, who comes back with parcels when he knows I'll be in from the school walk, he's brill and saves me many a trip to the main post office to collect stuff. I gave him a tenner in a card. I wrote "Thank you so much for going beyond the expected and bringing parcels to me when you know I'll be in, I really appreciate the fact that you do that. Thank you for always taking the time to smile and wave to DS through the window, even when it's puring with rain, he loves watching you do your work". The next time I saw him he said "thanks so much for the money, thank you more for the kind words, it's nice to be appreciated and it made me smile".

I love my postie - heaven help me when he retires and I go back to a shite one.

eandh · 24/12/2008 06:33

1st year ever I gave the postie a present bottle of wine and box of roses, we've had this postie since march and he's fab he'll leave my parcels with friend opposite or if he sees me going to do preschool pick up he'll loiter about if I have a signed parcel (I'm only gone 10-15mins) plus he answers dd1 random questions without batting an eyelid (and some of them are very bizarre)was fantastic delivering xmas presents that had obvious packaging (basically he'd put them behind my side gate then knock and tell me what was thereso I could get it in when the dd's were not around)

blushingm · 24/12/2008 09:48

i offered mine a mince pie!!! He'd seem me getting ready to go out and rushed back to his car and over to me to give me a special delivery (no inuendos please ).

He often does that (stop giggling)or leaves them in my shed for me!!!!!

He also helped find some obscure address when i started my courier round

Do you think i should tip him????

HappyMummyOfOne · 24/12/2008 11:28

I didn't tip the postman as we never seem to have the same one, plus parcels come with a separate driver so tehnically we have two different ones most days.

Window cleaner hasn't been, he comes once a month and usually comes a week early in december but not been so will have to be a new years tip.

Have bought a nice box of chocs for the lady who couriers my Next/ELC/Amazon as she is fab and my deliveries and collections are always hassle free.

No milkman or paperboy. Never thought to tip the binmen.

thritbies · 24/12/2008 11:43

Thanks guys. Have consulted with my mum and put £5 in card, plus choc coins- want to make it as light as poss for him to carry. We've had the same one for over a year and he is totally fab re hiding parcels, signing for stuff and leaving it in secure places etc, plus he knows us all by name. I would have given him more but we are skint (who isn't). Hope it is enough!

I would have if it was our old one, but this one is not that good. Wouldn't dream of tipping our dustmen who often forget to empty our bin even when they walk straight past it

blushingm · 24/12/2008 12:20

oh happymumofone - i deliver next/elc etc and no one even said happy christmas - i wish i delivered to you

HappyMummyOfOne · 24/12/2008 13:00

Blushingm, how sad is that - doesnt cost anything to say happy christmas.

My courier is fab and I do appreciate when she comes back later with items or comes to collect items at a time i'll be in. She makes online shopping even easier - now if only she worked for a few more stores lol.

blushingm · 24/12/2008 14:21

ooooh we are taking more- we've just started doing asda george, miss selfridge, dorothy perkins, top shop, wallis, burtons - maybe you'll love your courier even more soon xxxxx

MadameCastafiore · 24/12/2008 14:22

I give him a tip -

Don't knock too loudly in the morning and sign for anything and luz it over the side gates if I am not around and it doesn't feel breakable!

roisin · 24/12/2008 14:23

We do but I hadn't got organised this year yet. Our postie is fantastic in every way.

He had to knock this morning to get a signature, but I hadn't got a card/cash ready, and knew I didn't have any money in my purse. I was very embarrassed.

I will have to look out for him after Christmas.
