So, Christmas gurus - what size do I need to feed a group of seven people? Should I go for a bird or a crown? What about free-range? How much per kilo/lb should I be paying for free-range or non free range? PLEASE help me, I have no clue, and I KNOW I should have got this sorted before now

Im rubbish on the sizes but a turkey crown is more hassel free as no bones to mess around with.

My mother (bless her) after me asking her to get us a small Turkey has got us a 10lb one - which i know will be more than enough to feed 7 people but there are only 4 of us!

CharleeInPantoPaperChains · 19/12/2008 17:46

Sorry i didn't post what you wanted

I think it's roughly 1lb per person for Turkey more if you want leftovers. I have never done just a crown so can't help you there. You can get freeronge but it will be quite a bit more expensive than non free range.

I think that its generally 6-7kilos for 6-8 people.

As for getting a Turkey, they still had some available on the Ocado website.

SkirtingBored · 19/12/2008 18:56

Thank you all. So, is it 1 lb per person or 1 kg? Any idea of the price difference between free-range and non free-range?

I was advised around 1lb per person (although am doing a leg of lamb as well) and am expecting it to be approx £5 per kilo.

CantSleepWontSleep · 19/12/2008 19:19

I bought a rolled stuffed free range turkey breast yesterday. Think there was about 13lbs of meat in it, and it should have cost £60, but the butcher took pity on me and knocked a fiver off.

Def don't need as much as 1kg per person!

SkirtingBored · 19/12/2008 20:26

So, about 1lb per person, and about £5 per lb if free range? OK, so I have ball park figure. Now, let's see if I can find one . Ta!

sorry SB I have probably confused you by using two different measurements, I'm expecting to pay £5 per KILO, which is about 2.2lbs. Effectively it works out for me as £2/£3 per person for the turkey. Does that make sense?

(disclaimer - I am crap at maths so feel free to ignore my calculations!)

FlynnieAroundTheChristmasTree · 19/12/2008 20:48

Waitrose have a Free range turkey from £20 and Organic at about £54 and non organic from £14.
Good luck

SkirtingBored · 19/12/2008 21:08

Somerfields have fresh turkeys half price about £12 up to 4 kilos. I popped into my local one this morning and they had loads and were getting another delivery tonight. Staff say they didn't know about it till they got into work this morning although I saw it on television lunchtime yesterday. The sell by date was 26th I think I will leave getting one till Monday. They usually say about 13oz per person I remember when I used to have all the family years ago I used to buy up to a 25lb one and that did about 20 with leftovers for cold and sandwiches etc. and our lot were great eaters.
