Does anyone else love Salvation Army brass bands?

Aw I love a good brass band at Christmas.
When I got back to the railway station on Tue night the railway band were playing. They were good but not as good as the Sally Army, who always look so nice in their uniforms with gleaming brass buttons.

Brings a tear to my eye.

I love them ( and i used to play in one as a teenager..sigh)

Absolutely agree Kathy.
When I was little we lived up the road from the Salvation Army and the band used to march up our road every Sunday morning.
I absolutely love hearing it now, it brings back lovely memories.
I also love the sound of church bells because I used to live next door to a church and would wake up to the bells ringing every Sunday morning.

What did you play Fred?

I was in a brass band and used to freeze my ass off play carols and stuff at xmas in Asda!! Really miss playing in a band!

ginnny, I remember those days we loved seeing them and just realised that's probably why the sound of the salvation army band brings a warm feeling.

I do

My mum was brought up Salvation Army, and her dad played, so it also brings back fond memories of my grandma.

Maybe one of you can tell me - when did the women stop wearing bonnets? I'm sure I remember seeing them in them when I was young (in the 70s) - did I imagine it?

Yes you are right - they did wear bonnets in the 70's, and I went to the SA girl guides in the 80's and they definietly wore bonnets then.
I rather liked them actually !!!!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 19/12/2008 12:07

I think they looked great too

Have to try to persuade dd to play brass when she's bigger so she can be in a band. (Maybe not Salvation Army though as we are not a very Christian family. )

Last year they came along our road on christmas eve, it was brilliant. I really hope they do this year.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 19/12/2008 12:11

It's great when they do that TheDevil, the best thing is you can hear them in the distance as they get closer.

We had some very crap carol singers the other day who weren't even collecting for charity

I gave them a £50 note. It was all I had in the house and exh had just got his fat bonus confirmed so I thought why the hell not. I've since learnt they do amazing work around here so am happy to give, and they do put in the effort don't they.

DoubleBluff · 19/12/2008 12:16

They usually come down our street to play in the week leading up to Christmas, I love it and it puts me in the Christmas mood.
Also brings a lump to my throat - don't know why

Myrrhcy · 19/12/2008 16:39

They really remind me of my childhood Christmases.

I loved the way they would stand under a streetlight and start playing.

We don't get them anymore

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 19/12/2008 16:55

I often cry at brass bands at Christmas.

Which causes a problem when I'm playing in one

I love the way people smile. Such a simple pleasure.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 19/12/2008 16:57

And I've been known to blub like an idiot whilst listening to The Coventry Carol

Kathyis6incheshigh · 19/12/2008 17:54

LOL Mary.
I will peer closely at band members in the future to see if they have wet cheeks.

It's the one thing i miss about christmas.

When i was growing up every christmas eve they used to play on the green outside mums house. You knew it was christmas when you heard them.
