i have this same dilemma every year. usualy do but then don't know how to ask if it is insulting or not.
i work in a rather multi-cultural/religion place. as a christian i want to say happy christmas to everyone but don't really know the religious ettiquet. any ideas?

I have a jewish friend, who got very offended the first year i knew her and I didn't send her a christmas card. So, I always send one now but always get one that says something like 'seasons greetings' and isn't overtly christmassy !

Can you take a lead from them ?

TipsyFairydifferentID · 16/12/2008 19:12

I work with a Muslim lady and she has given out Christmas cards and recieved them too. If unsure, could you do seasons greetings? Many o fthe major religions have their festivals at this time of year

Half my family are muslim and I always send Xmas cards. I try to remember eid too but usually forget - and they never send Xmas cards.

I have plenty of friends who don't believe in God at all, and send them cards and they send me cards. I don't see the difference. This time of year is significant to all the major religions, so sending a seasons greetings card is unlikely to offend anyone.

leenasmom · 16/12/2008 21:40

i am muslim and my friends of all faiths do give my family xmas cards... i dont mind feel included as i make them in my faith celebrations of Eid( no i wouldnt risk food poisoning them with my cooked sweets..but i gift them with sweets and choc or something)

AussieLou · 16/12/2008 22:37

I send Christmas cards to everyone, irregardless of thier faith, because Christmas is my thing. I do write happy hanukkah in cards for my jewish friends. If I can get my hands on an Eid card I will send that also. Better to have received something from someone then nothing at all IMO.

sticksantaupyourchimney · 16/12/2008 22:40

'Seasons' Greetings' is unlikely to offend anyone - and very few people are offended by an expression of good will anyway.
I sometimes write 'Have a cool Yule' to pagan mates, admittedly.

UnquietDad · 16/12/2008 22:40

Yes, all the time. The Christmas card list which DW and I have includes the usual smattering of lapsed CofE and Catholics, atheists and agnostics, some ardent Christians, one Sikh and a Hindu. I think everyone enters into the spirit of it.

UnquietDad · 16/12/2008 22:41

Obviously when I say all the time I mean only at Christmas ... duh...

thumbElf · 16/12/2008 22:41

Yes. I give Christmas cards to my Hindu friend, my Muslim friend, my Jewish friends and my atheist friends. I mostly don't give cards with religious significance; only to those I know have a Christian belief.

So far no one has complained; and I get cards back from all of them!

LilySwalLoosHerTurkeyBaster · 16/12/2008 22:43

Yes my sister muslim and send them a xmas card
also one of the little girls at pre school is muslim and she sends a xmas card to us!!

EightiesChick · 17/12/2008 01:29

Yes, though I also try to send ones that don't have Biblical images on them - I usually have ones with a winter scene on or something. No-one has ever been offended. I think Christmas has become so secularised as a festival that you can do this now as so many non-Christians just celebrate it as a day for family, peace and goodwill etc. I can see how people might feel more offended at the thought that they were being left out because they seem 'different', in fact.

piscesmoon · 17/12/2008 01:42

Yes-but I make sure they say 'Season's Greetings'.

BouncingTinsel · 17/12/2008 07:21

I have some atheist friends (DH and I are practicing CoE). I send them seasons greetings.

Actually I don't send cards to anyone except family - I do eCards from Cancer Research instead, great charity plus a bit more environmentally friendly

UnquietDad · 17/12/2008 09:40

Could I just say that as an atheist I don't have a problem at all with Merry CHRISTMAS cards or those with biblical scenes on. I even send them. They are just stories, after all. I think there is this misconception that we are a joyless lot who wan to ban all mention of Jesus.

georgimama · 17/12/2008 10:59

I'm glad about that UD just in case I know you, because I always buy religious cards and I send them to everyone, regardless of their beliefs. I never thought it would come as much of a shock to the recipient that Christmas is about baby Jesus, even if they don't believe this themselves.

Acinonyx · 17/12/2008 12:40

I'm an atheist myself so my 'Xmas' cards are always non-religious anyway.
