Real or artificial tree - which one?

We have a 3ft artificial tree, but I've just seen a cute little real one for about reduced from 12.00 to 6.00ish in Lidl.

DS will love it. If I get a real tree, does that mean I have to use natural decorations?

real
nothing beats it for smell and atmos
decorate it any way you like!

pagwatch · 16/12/2008 14:26

yer what?

What are natural decorations?

I always have a real christmas tree which is festooned with tinsel and various sprinkled and shiney crap collected and made by the children over the last 15 years.Oh and some twinkly lights from Woolies circa 1989

real! and we don;t have natural decos on it, an assortment of decorations, fairies, father chirstmas, stars, stockings etc.
we have a small one in thwe dining room that just ahs chocolate baubles on, so full of cadburys choc, thorntons tree decs and smarties baubles.

Seeline · 16/12/2008 14:27

Pagwatch - have you stolen my tree?

LittleFairySmile · 16/12/2008 14:29

I LOVE a real tree, but artificial is cheaper!

TheSweetLittleBunny · 16/12/2008 14:31

Natural - made out of paper, metal and stuff.

Our current (plastic) tree is usually decorated with stuff me and DS have made out of salt dough, painted pine cones, tinsel, chocolate, baubles and anything else that can pile on to a 3ft tree.

Lately I have started to wonder though about the naffness of tinsel and wondered if there was a natural alternative.

Like paper chains, long crinkled crepe paper - not reusable I know, but fun to make.

Last year I got some really nice candy striped wrapping paper and we cut 'snowflakes' out of it with a large hole in the middle and 'poked' them onto the tree branches. They looked amazing.

jumpingbeans · 16/12/2008 14:36

Real every time, ohhh the smell when you come in it lovely

pagwatch · 16/12/2008 14:37

Seeline
I'm not sure.
Is it only decorated up to the height that an average 6 year old can reach and then remains totally bare above?

Do some of the decorations look a bit ... well chewed really. And is the fairy looking a bit pissed and possibly a little incontinent?

If its your come and get it. I was sure I was expecting something with a 'theme' like crystal and white a la Home and Garden.

What happened to that life I was supposed to have.
I don't even have any fucking rafia in the house AND the wrapping paper is un co-ordinated.

TheSweetLittleBunny · 16/12/2008 14:37

You can make shapes with DC's out of salt dough, and paint them and put glitter on them. It's nice to look back over the years and see what they made

Ooooh - stained glass window biscuits, I made some and they worked really well!!!! My MIL asked when I brought them from, and said "I didn't think you'd made them they're far too professional!" .

TheSweetLittleBunny · 16/12/2008 14:47

How do you do those LittleFairy? I'd love to know (rushes off to pick DS from school).

i don't think pmsl quite covers it when i read pagwatch's last message -
Do some of the decorations look a bit ... well chewed really. And is the fairy looking a bit pissed and possibly a little incontinent?

Big mouthful of mincepie landed on the keyboard (from my mouth!) Nearly choked with laughing!

That's my tree!

pagwatch · 16/12/2008 15:00

I would but tis true.

Lemontart · 16/12/2008 15:02

we have a real tree with the most inco-ordinated decorations imaginable. All different colours, many handmade, some inherited, some given by others, loo roll angels, hedgehog fir cones, you name it. Silly idea that a real tree needs to be all "nigella". Just have what tree you want and do it how you want. My tree looks different every day as the kids enjoy rearranging the baubles and decorations on a daily basis (will be a pile of twigs and presents hidden under needles by the 25th).
My SIL has a tree she puts up in a window so kids (primary age, not babies) can?t touch it. All matching trendy brown and copper.. I know she thinks mine is a hideous muddle but at least my kids get to touch, smell and enjoy it.

Lemontart · 16/12/2008 15:03

uncoordinated rather - or incoherent perhaps
cough syrup overdose here I think.... hiccup!

TheSweetLittleBunny · 16/12/2008 15:58

Went to look at the lidl tree - DS doesn't like it. Says it's too prickly. So it looks like we'll be faking it for another year. It was quite prickly actually.

vesela · 16/12/2008 16:04

I'll be glad if my DD decides our tree is prickly - that way there's a chance she won't pull all the decorations off!

MilaMae · 16/12/2008 16:37

I have a real tweaked tree.

It's a smelly, non drop one complete with Dartmoor grass . It's gorgeous the smell really reminds me of childhood. It's got nibbled gingerbread hearts on too which you can smell.

The dc love it,they keep stroking it,they love having a real tree in the house particularly a Dartmoor one as we're on the moor most weekends. They've played round it all day.

Christmas trees are very personal imho,do what works for you,the dc love them real or artificial.
